Motorcycle, boat, RV and snowmobile insurance

The Capital Region has Saratoga Lake and the Great Sacandaga, the Adirondack trail system an hour north, and six months of riding weather. The toys that go with that are insured badly by default: a homeowners policy covers a boat only up to small limits, an auto policy doesn't touch a snowmobile, and a motorcycle on a car policy is priced like a car. Specialty policies fix all three.

In short

Motorcycles in New York must carry the same minimum liability as cars plus uninsured motorist coverage, and no-fault does not apply to them. Boats, RVs, ATVs and snowmobiles have no state insurance mandate but need their own policies because auto and homeowners coverage for them is minimal or absent. Specialty carriers price these vehicles far better than a standard auto policy does.

Motorcycles

Liability limits should match your car's, not the state minimum, because a motorcycle crash produces the same injuries to others. Add uninsured/underinsured motorist at the same limits, medical payments since no-fault doesn't apply, and comprehensive and collision on any bike worth more than a few thousand dollars, with agreed value on custom or vintage machines. Discounts for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, multi-bike households and bundling with auto are meaningful.

Boats and personal watercraft

  • Hull coverage on agreed value for newer boats, actual cash value for older ones.
  • Liability of at least $300,000, more for larger or faster boats, and enough to qualify for your umbrella.
  • Marina and slip requirements on Saratoga Lake, Lake George and the Great Sacandaga typically call for liability and a certificate.
  • Trailer, towing on the water, fuel spill and wreck removal: cheap add-ons that are expensive to lack.
  • Jet skis are a separate underwriting category with higher liability rates for younger operators.

Snowmobiles and ATVs

Theft from a trailer or a shed and collision on the trail are the claims I see most. A specialty policy covers both plus liability, and satisfies the trail-permit expectation for club trails in Saratoga, Warren and Hamilton counties. Homeowners policies exclude these vehicles once they leave your property.

RVs and travel trailers

Motorhomes need an auto liability policy with RV-specific coverage for the living space and personal effects. Travel trailers and fifth wheels take liability from the tow vehicle but need their own comprehensive and collision. If you spend months in the unit, full-timer coverage replaces the liability your homeowners policy would otherwise provide. Storage-season rate reductions are available.

Specialty carriers

Why not just add it to the car policy

Standard auto carriers price motorcycles and boats as an afterthought. Specialty carriers price them on riding and boating experience, seasonal use and equipment, and include coverages the auto policy doesn't offer. The difference in premium and in coverage is usually large enough to justify a separate policy.

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

What insurance does New York require for a motorcycle?

Liability at the same minimums as a car ($25,000/$50,000 bodily injury, $10,000 property damage) and uninsured motorist coverage. New York's no-fault law does not apply to motorcycles, so there's no PIP: your own medical bills after a crash come from your health insurance or optional medical payments coverage, which is why I recommend adding it.

Is my boat covered by my homeowners policy?

Only barely: physical damage to small boats is typically capped at around $1,000 to $1,500, and liability is limited to small, low-horsepower boats. Anything with a real motor, and any boat kept at a marina or slip, needs its own policy for hull, liability, towing and, on the Great Sacandaga, the trailer between the driveway and the ramp.

Do I need insurance for a snowmobile or ATV?

New York requires liability insurance for snowmobiles operated anywhere other than your own property, and trail permits assume it. ATVs need it to ride on public land. Homeowners policies exclude both off premises. A specialty policy is inexpensive and covers theft, which is one of the most common snowmobile claims.

How does RV insurance differ from auto?

A motorhome needs auto liability plus coverage for the living quarters, contents, awnings and equipment, and often full-timer or vacation liability if you live in it or park at campsites. Travel trailers get liability from the tow vehicle but need their own physical-damage policy. Agreed-value settlement and total-loss replacement are worth having on newer units.

Can I suspend coverage in winter?

Most specialty carriers price motorcycles and boats for a seasonal layup automatically, so you don't need to cancel and re-buy, which would create gaps and lose your continuous-coverage discount. Comprehensive should stay on all year for theft, fire and the tree that falls on the garage.
