Who needs a stand-alone Part D plan

  • Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap policy: Original Medicare doesn't cover most prescriptions, and Medigap doesn't either, so drug coverage comes from one of these plans. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) explains the pairing.
  • Medicare Advantage: most Advantage plans include drug coverage, and joining a stand-alone plan usually ends the Advantage enrollment. The county lists are on the 2027 plans page.
  • Employer or retiree coverage that counts as creditable: you can wait without a penalty. Part D in New York covers the late-enrollment penalty and when it applies.

How to pick among them

The plan with the lowest premium is often not the cheapest for the year. What decides it is whether your prescriptions are on the plan's drug list, at what tier, and at which pharmacies. Part D premiums for 2027 covers what's changing, and if your income is limited, Extra Help can lower the cost of any of these plans. Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7; the new plan starts January 1.

How many stand-alone Part D plans are there in New York for 2027?

9, according to the CMS landscape file read October 22, 2026. New York is a single Part D region, so the same plans are sold statewide.

Why are there no premiums on this page?

I keep the table to what Medicare's plan file lists: name, carrier and plan ID. Premiums, deductibles and drug lists belong in material the carriers review under Medicare's marketing rules. Each plan links to its own Medicare.gov page, which shows them, and I go through them with you against your own prescriptions.

Do I need a Part D plan if I have Medicare Advantage?

Usually not: most Advantage plans include drug coverage, and joining a stand-alone Part D plan usually ends the Advantage enrollment. Stand-alone plans are for people on Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap policy.
