Where Saratoga County residents get care

Networks decide whether a Medicare Advantage plan works for you, and in Saratoga County they follow two gravitational pulls:

• Saratoga Hospital and its affiliated practices in Saratoga Springs, Wilton and Malta — the county's only hospital, a member of the Albany Med Health System since 2017 but contracted with carriers in its own right.
• The Albany systems — Albany Medical Center and St. Peter's Health Partners — which many southern-county residents in Clifton Park, Halfmoon and Mechanicville use, particularly for specialists.

Which carriers contract with which system changes year to year. Before we look at a single premium, I run every doctor you see against each plan's current directory. If you're split between systems, that usually points toward a PPO plan or toward Original Medicare with a Medigap policy.

What's particular about this county

• Plenty of noise. Every October brings a wave of plan marketing; the plan with the most advertising is not a signal of anything. The full county plan list shows what is actually sold here.
• Commuters retiring in place. A lot of Clifton Park and Halfmoon residents retire from state or GE careers with retiree health coverage. How that coverage coordinates with Medicare — and whether a Medicare Advantage plan would cancel it — is a question to answer before enrolling in anything.
• Winters away. If you spend winters out of state, an HMO generally covers care outside its network only for emergencies, urgent care away from home and temporary out-of-area dialysis. A PPO may cover out-of-network providers, usually at a higher cost; Original Medicare with Medigap works with any provider in the country that accepts Medicare.
• Veterans. The Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany serves the county. VA coverage works alongside Medicare; it doesn't replace the need for Part B, and I'll explain how the two fit.
