Medicare in Saratoga County
My office is in Clifton Park, so most of the people I sit down with are Saratoga County residents. Plan availability and networks here are shaped by where you get care — Saratoga Hospital to the north, the Albany systems to the south — and by the county's fast-growing retiree population.
Where Saratoga County residents get care
Networks decide whether a Medicare Advantage plan works for you, and in Saratoga County they follow two gravitational pulls:
- Saratoga Hospital and its affiliated practices in Saratoga Springs, Wilton and Malta — the county's only hospital, a member of the Albany Med Health System since 2017 but contracted with carriers in its own right.
- The Albany systems — Albany Medical Center and St. Peter's Health Partners — which many southern-county residents in Clifton Park, Halfmoon and Mechanicville use, particularly for specialists.
Which carriers contract with which system changes year to year. Before we look at a single premium, I run every doctor you see against each plan's current directory. If you're split between systems, that usually points toward a PPO plan or toward Original Medicare with a Medigap policy.
What's particular about this county
- Growth. Saratoga County has one of the fastest-growing 65+ populations in upstate New York, and carriers compete hard for it — which means plenty of plan choice, and plenty of marketing noise every October.
- Commuters retiring in place. A lot of Clifton Park and Halfmoon residents retire from state or GE careers with retiree health coverage. How that coverage coordinates with Medicare — and whether a Medicare Advantage plan would cancel it — is a question to answer before enrolling in anything.
- Snowbirds. If you spend winters out of state, an HMO built around Saratoga Hospital won't travel with you. That's a Medigap or PPO conversation.
- Veterans. The Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany serves the county. VA coverage works alongside Medicare; it doesn't replace the need for Part B, and I'll explain how the two fit.
Saratoga County Office for the Aging
Now part of the county's Department of Aging and Youth Services, at 152 West High Street in Ballston Spa, the Office for the Aging runs HIICAP — New York's free Medicare counselling — plus benefit screening for the Medicare Savings Program and EPIC. Which Medicare Advantage plans are available in Saratoga County?
Several national and regional carriers offer Advantage plans here, and the line-up changes every January. Rather than list plans that may be discontinued next year, I check what's actually offered at your ZIP code and which of your doctors are in each plan's network. Ask me for this year's comparison.
I see doctors in both Saratoga Springs and Albany. Does that matter?
For Medicare Advantage, yes — networks are built around health systems, and a plan that includes Saratoga Hospital's physicians may treat an Albany Med specialist as out of network, or the reverse. For Original Medicare with a Medigap plan, it doesn't matter: any provider who accepts Medicare, anywhere.
Where can I get free Medicare counselling in Saratoga County?
The Saratoga County Office for the Aging in Ballston Spa runs HIICAP, New York's free, unbiased Medicare counselling program. It's a good complement to working with a broker — they cover every plan, I enroll you in the ones I'm appointed with and stay on afterwards.
Do you meet in person?
Yes. The office is at 451 Clifton Park Center Rd, off Northway Exit 9, by appointment. I also travel to clients in Malta, Ballston Spa, Saratoga Springs and Wilton, and do most first calls by phone.
