What you can do without going in
- Apply for retirement, spousal or Medicare benefits at ssa.gov; most Capital Region retirees I work with never set foot in an office.

- Appeal a Medicare IRMAA surcharge after retirement or another life change with form SSA-44, by mail or fax to this office.
What still needs the office, or at least a phone appointment: identity documents that must be seen in person, some immigration-status cases, first-time cards for non-citizens, and anything the website rejects.
Before you file: the part the office doesn't do
Social Security staff will process whatever month you choose. They are not allowed to advise you on which month, and that choice is permanent: claiming at 62 pays about 70% of your full benefit for life, waiting to 70 pays about 124%, and the earnings test, spousal and survivor rules and Medicare timing all interact. Yes. Social Security handles Medicare Part A and B enrollment, Part B special enrollment when employer coverage ends (form CMS-40B with the employer's CMS-L564), Extra Help applications and IRMAA appeals (form SSA-44). The office does not handle Medicare Advantage, Medigap or Part D plan choices; that's what a licensed agent or HIICAP counselor does.

What should I bring?
Photo ID, your Social Security number, and for a retirement or Medicare application your birth certificate or passport, W-2 or tax return for last year, bank routing and account number for direct deposit, and, if it applies, proof of citizenship or immigration status, marriage certificate, and the employer's health-coverage form for a Part B special enrollment. Originals or certified copies; photocopies are not accepted for identity documents.
