What you can do without going in

  • Apply for retirement, spousal or Medicare benefits at ssa.gov, without an office visit.
  • Replace a Social Security card, change your address, set up direct deposit, print a benefit letter, check your earnings record through a my Social Security account.
  • Apply for Extra Help with Part D at ssa.gov/extrahelp.
  • Appeal a Medicare IRMAA surcharge after retirement or another life change with form SSA-44, by mail or fax to this office.

What still needs the office, or at least a phone appointment: identity documents that must be seen in person, some immigration-status cases, first-time cards for non-citizens, and anything the website rejects.

Before you file: the part the office doesn't do

Social Security staff will process whatever month you choose. They explain your options but won't pick a claiming month for you, and that choice is permanent: claiming at 62 pays about 70% of your full benefit for life, waiting to 70 pays about 124%, and the earnings test, spousal and survivor rules and Medicare timing all interact. I run those scenarios as a Registered Social Security Analyst before you book the appointment, at no charge; see Social Security claiming and turning 65. For Medicare plan choices the office can't help with either, see Medicare plans in the Capital Region.

Questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

What are the Gloversville Social Security office hours?

Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed weekends and federal holidays. Phone lines at the national number, 1-800-772-1213, are open weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check ssa.gov/emergency for weather closings before a visit.

Do I need an appointment at the Gloversville office?

Social Security now asks for appointments for most in-person services; walk-ins are seen when possible but can wait a long time. Book by calling 1-888-528-9446 or 1-800-772-1213, or through your my Social Security account. Card replacements and address changes can be done online without any visit.

Can I apply for Medicare at the Gloversville Social Security office?

Yes. Social Security handles Medicare Part A and B enrollment, Part B special enrollment when employer coverage ends (form CMS-40B with the employer's CMS-L564), Extra Help applications and IRMAA appeals (form SSA-44). The office does not handle Medicare Advantage, Medigap or Part D plan choices; that's what a licensed agent or HIICAP counselor does.

Is there a Medicare office in Gloversville?

No; Medicare has no local offices anywhere. Enrollment questions go to Social Security (1-888-528-9446 or 1-800-772-1213), plan and claim questions to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), and free unbiased counseling to HIICAP through the county Office for the Aging (1-800-701-0501). For plan comparison and enrollment, a licensed local agent like me does it at no fee.

What should I bring?

Photo ID, your Social Security number, and for a retirement or Medicare application your birth certificate or passport, W-2 or tax return for last year, bank routing and account number for direct deposit, and, if it applies, proof of citizenship or immigration status, marriage certificate, and the employer's health-coverage form for a Part B special enrollment. Originals or certified copies; photocopies are not accepted for identity documents.
