Medicare help in Washington County
Washington County runs from Hudson Falls and Fort Edward out to the Vermont line, and where you get care decides which Medicare plans work: Glens Falls Hospital for many, Saratoga or Albany for some, Vermont for others near the state line. I meet people here at home as well as by phone and video.
Where Washington County residents get care
- Glens Falls Hospital, just across the county line in Glens Falls, a member of the Albany Med Health System. The Glens Falls Hospital page puts every plan sold in Washington County against the hospital's own list.
- Saratoga and Albany. If your doctors are in Saratoga Springs or Albany, check them separately; being in the same health system does not guarantee the same insurance contracts.
- Vermont. If you use doctors or a hospital across the state line, that decides more than anything else. Original Medicare with Medigap works with any provider that accepts Medicare; a Medicare Advantage plan works only as far as its network, so each Vermont provider has to be checked by name.
What's particular about Washington County
- Its own plan list. Medicare Advantage plans are filed by county, so a Fort Edward address and a Queensbury address can see different plan lists even when both use Glens Falls Hospital.
- Distance. In the rural towns the nearest in-network doctor can be a long drive. A plan with a small local network costs you in miles, not just dollars, so we look at where the in-network providers actually are.
- Help with costs. New York's Medicare Savings Program, Extra Help and EPIC have no asset test for the Medicare Savings Program, so they're worth checking even if you think your income is too high.
- Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.

Medicare Advantage plans in Washington County
Advantage plans are filed and priced by county, so the list for Washington County is its own list. The carriers whose plans I'm authorized to offer here are the 11 on the carriers page, each with what it sells and which of the region's hospitals list it; which of their plans are sold in Washington County changes each January. What decides the choice in this county is whether the plan lists Glens Falls Hospital and the Albany Med Health System, and any Saratoga, Albany or Vermont providers you use — the plan's provider directory, not the carrier name, is the final check.
Every Medicare Advantage plan sold in Washington County for 2026 is on its own page: all 45 of them, with carrier, plan type, special-needs status and which 43 I can enroll you in, straight from the CMS file.
The plan finder narrows this to the plan types and carriers worth your time in Washington County, in eight questions. How Advantage works statewide, the 2026 caps and the New York rule that makes it reversible: Medicare Advantage plans in New York. The two routes in dollars: Advantage vs Medigap in New York. How a plan review works
- A short call: your ZIP code, your doctors (including any in Vermont), your prescriptions, any retiree or VA coverage.
- A written comparison of the two or three plans I'd genuinely consider for you, with total yearly cost, not just premium.
- If you enroll through me, I submit it and remain your contact. No fee for any of it.
If you're turning 65, start about six months out. If you're already on a plan, the best time to check it is the Annual Enrollment Period each fall. Next door: Warren County and Saratoga County. Request a review.
We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 11 organizations which offer 63 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options. Insurers' legal names and home offices: carriers page.
Common questions
Short answers to what people ask before they call.
My doctors are in Vermont. Can a New York Medicare plan cover them?
Original Medicare with a Medigap policy covers any provider in the country that accepts Medicare, including Vermont. A Medicare Advantage plan depends on its network: an HMO generally covers out-of-network care only for emergencies, urgent care away from home and temporary out-of-area dialysis, and a PPO may cover out-of-network providers at a higher cost. Check each Vermont doctor and hospital by name in the plan's own directory before you enroll.
Do Medicare Advantage plans in Washington County include Glens Falls Hospital?
Glens Falls Hospital is part of the Albany Med Health System and follows the system's accepted-insurance list, and its own page also names UnitedHealthcare. A carrier on that list still doesn't guarantee a specific plan, so I check the hospital and each of your doctors by name. Every plan sold in Washington County is placed against the hospital's list on the Glens Falls Hospital page.
Where can I get free Medicare counselling in Washington County?
The Washington County Office for Aging and Disability Resources runs HIICAP, New York's free, unbiased Medicare counselling program, at the Municipal Center, 383 Broadway, Building B, in Fort Edward, (518) 746-2420.
