Medicare agent for Herkimer County
My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Herkimer County residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. Most Medicare choices here start with one question: how does the plan treat Little Falls Hospital, the hospitals in Utica and the doctors you already see?
Where Herkimer County residents get care
- Little Falls Hospital, at 140 Burwell Street in Little Falls, (315) 823-1000, a subsidiary of the Bassett Healthcare Network, with an emergency room open around the clock. Bassett's insurance page lists carriers for its practitioners, not individual Medicare Advantage plans, so the plan's own directory is the check.
- Wynn Hospital in Utica, at 111 Hospital Drive, part of the Mohawk Valley Health System, which lists Herkimer County in the area it serves. If you see doctors in Utica, check them and the hospital separately from anything in the Bassett network: a plan that lists one system does not automatically list the other.
Before we look at a single premium, I run every doctor you see against each plan's current directory for Herkimer County.
What's particular about Herkimer County
- Its own plan list. Medicare Advantage plans are filed by county, so an Ilion address and an address across the line in Oneida County can see different plan lists.
- Distance. In the rural towns and around Old Forge, the nearest in-network doctor can be a long drive. A plan with a small local network costs you in miles, not just dollars, so we look at where the in-network providers actually are.
- Help with costs. New York's Medicare Savings Program, Extra Help and EPIC have no asset test for the Medicare Savings Program, so they're worth checking even if you think your income is too high.
- Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.

Statewide HIICAP line: 1-800-701-0501. How a HIICAP counselor and an agent differ: free Medicare counselling.
Medicare Advantage plans in Herkimer County
Advantage plans are filed and priced by county, so the list for Herkimer County is its own list. The carriers whose plans I'm authorized to offer here are the 11 on the carriers page, each with what it sells and which of the region's hospitals list it; which of their plans are sold in Herkimer County changes each January. What decides the choice in this county is whether the plan lists Little Falls Hospital and the Bassett Healthcare Network, and any doctors you see in Utica — the plan's provider directory, not the carrier name, is the final check.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Herkimer County include Little Falls Hospital?
Little Falls Hospital is a subsidiary of the Bassett Healthcare Network. Bassett's participating-insurance page lists the Medicare Advantage carriers its practitioners take, and says some health plans offer products that don't include Bassett practitioners. Carriers are not plans, so before you enroll I check the hospital and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's own directory.
