Medicare agent for Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk
The villages of Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk are in Herkimer County, and that decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from. Herkimer has offices of two health systems, Bassett and the Mohawk Valley Health System, which contract with plans separately. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk residents by phone, WhatsApp and video.
Where Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk residents get care
Doctors and hospitals here belong to two health systems that contract with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:
- Bassett Healthcare Network — Bassett Health Center Herkimer at 321 East Albany Street, with primary care (315-867-2700, weekdays 8 to 5) and an outpatient lab, and Bassett Convenient Care Herkimer in the same building (315-867-2884), open weekdays 8 to 7 and weekends 9 to 4 with no appointment needed. Its hospital in the county is Little Falls Hospital, 140 Burwell Street in Little Falls (315-823-1000), a subsidiary of the Bassett network with an emergency room open around the clock.
- Mohawk Valley Health System — the MVHS Medical Group Herkimer Medical Office at 201 East State Street (315-574-2300), with primary care and a lab. Its hospital is Wynn Hospital, 111 Hospital Drive in Utica (315-917-9966), with an emergency room; MVHS lists Herkimer County in the area it serves.
Bassett's insurance page says its practitioners take part in most available health plans, but that some plans offer specific products that leave Bassett practitioners out, and a plan that lists one system does not automatically list the other. With an HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital and any rehab after a stay all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here; I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.
What's particular about Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk
- One county list, doctors in two places. All three villages are in Herkimer County and see its plan list: 33 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Plans are filed by where you live, so seeing doctors in Utica doesn't change your list; it changes which directories we have to check.
- Getting to appointments. The Herkimer County Office for the Aging provides transportation within the county and has wheelchair-accessible vans. Reservations have to be made ahead because demand is high, and donations help pay for fuel, drivers and repairs (315-867-1121). If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
- Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
- Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Herkimer and Ilion use?
It depends on your doctors. Bassett runs a health center and walk-in convenient care on East Albany Street in Herkimer, and its hospital in the county is Little Falls Hospital, a subsidiary of the Bassett Healthcare Network. The Mohawk Valley Health System has a medical office on East State Street in Herkimer, and its hospital is Wynn Hospital in Utica. A plan can list one system and not the other, so I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory before we compare anything else.
My doctors are in Utica. Does that change which plans I can get?
No. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk are in Herkimer County, so you choose from the Herkimer County list. What matters for your Utica doctors is whether they and Wynn Hospital are in the directory of the plan you choose, and I check each one by name.
I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments?
The Herkimer County Office for the Aging provides transportation within the county, with wheelchair-accessible vans. Reservations have to be made in advance because demand is high, and donations help cover fuel, drivers and repairs; call (315) 867-1121. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.
Where is free Medicare counselling for Herkimer and Ilion residents?
The Herkimer County Office for the Aging, at 109 Mary Street, Suite 1101, in Herkimer, (315) 867-1121, contracts with Catholic Charities of Herkimer County to provide HIICAP, New York's Medicare counselling program, by appointment. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. It's a good second opinion on anything I recommend.
Do you meet Herkimer and Ilion clients in person?
No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The comparison and the enrollment work the same way, and I stay your contact afterwards.
