Business insurance in Herkimer and Ilion

Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk sit side by side along the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal: Herkimer's Main Street downtown, Ilion's Main Street and the former Remington campus, and Mohawk on the canal's southern bank. Here's what a business there usually needs, and the village rules that change it.

In short

A small business in Herkimer, Ilion or Mohawk needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. Downtown Herkimer owners renovating with a DRI small project grant may be asked to name Herkimer County as additional insured, and vendors in Ilion need a general liability policy that names the Village. Ilion's plan puts Steele Creek in the 100-year flood zone, and commercial property policies exclude flood. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk businesses by phone, email and video.

What's different about insuring a business in Herkimer and Ilion

  • Downtown Herkimer. The State named Herkimer the Mohawk Valley winner of Round 7 of its Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The Village's streetscape project runs along Main Street from the Historic Four Corners at Court and Church Streets to East and West Albany Streets, and another DRI project would turn the former Masonic Temple on Main Street into an incubator with a certified commercial kitchen, co-working and event space. Shops and offices usually fit a business owners policy; see retail and restaurant insurance.
  • Grant-funded renovations. The DRI Small Project Fund, run by the Herkimer County IDA for the Village, reimburses facade, storefront, interior, signage and equipment work, and its application says applicants may be required to carry insurance naming Herkimer County as additional insured. Tell your carrier about the work before it starts, and ask contractors for their certificates. See commercial property and contractor insurance.
  • Signs in the Village of Herkimer. A permanent sign needs a Village sign permit reviewed by the Codes Enforcer, and changing-message signs are allowed only along the Route 5 and 28N corridor and Mohawk Street up to Steele Street. Outdoor signs often get only a small limit on a property policy, so I check that when I quote.
  • Ilion after Remington. The Village's 2025 comprehensive plan says the Remington Arms plant closed completely in March 2024 after two centuries, leaving a large campus open for redevelopment, and names health care and retail as the village's largest industries. A building left empty can lose property cover under a vacancy clause, and each new tenant needs its own property and liability policies. See medical and dental offices.
  • Vendors and food trucks in Ilion. A Village vendor or peddler permit needs a general liability policy naming the Village of Ilion as additional insured, and food sellers a Herkimer County Health Department permit too. The summer Food Truck Frenzy asks for a certificate naming the Village and the other parties on its application. See food truck insurance.
  • Steele Creek, the river and the canal. Ilion's plan puts Steele Creek, from German Flatts to the Mohawk River and Barge Canal, in the 100-year flood zone, and Mohawk sits on the southern bank of the Erie Canal and the Mohawk River. Flood is a separate policy; see flood insurance.

How I quote a Herkimer or Ilion business

A short conversation about what you do and what your lease, grant paperwork or permit requires; quotes from several carriers with what each leaves out, side by side; and once you choose and the policies are in force, I get you the certificates, usually the same day. Questions

Common questions

I want to sell from a cart or food truck in Ilion. What insurance does the Village want?

For a vendor or peddler permit, the Village of Ilion asks for photo ID, a Certificate of Authority from the State Department of Taxation and Finance, and a general liability policy that names the Village of Ilion as additional insured. If you sell food, you also need a Herkimer County Health Department permit for a mobile food service establishment. The summer Food Truck Frenzy application asks for a certificate of general liability insurance naming the Village and the others it lists, and on Village property you hold the Village harmless. Commercial auto for the truck is separate; the food truck page goes through it.

I'm renovating a building in downtown Herkimer with a DRI small project grant. Where does insurance come in?

The Small Project Fund, run by the Herkimer County IDA for the Village, pays for facade, storefront, interior, signage, upper-floor apartment and equipment work, and its application says applicants may be required to maintain insurance and name Herkimer County as additional insured, with an insurance certificate on the checklist. The grant reimburses work after it's done, so the building has to stay insured through the renovation: tell your carrier before work starts, set the limit on the finished building, and ask each contractor for liability and workers' comp certificates. Send me the grant paperwork and I'll check your policy against it.

I'm a contractor cutting a curb or street in Ilion. What will the Village ask for?

Ilion's permit to open a right of way has you safeguard the public and indemnify and hold the Village harmless for the work. Contractors and utility companies also file a bond, you stay responsible for the cut until the Department of Public Works accepts it a year after completion, and proof of insurance is attached to the permit. Under Workers' Compensation Law §57 and §220, a village has to see proof of workers' comp and disability coverage before it issues a permit; your carrier sends that form, and ACORD certificates aren't accepted for it. The contractor page covers the rest, including the Scaffold Law.

My business is near Steele Creek or the canal. Am I covered if it floods?

Not by a standard commercial property policy; flood is excluded. The Village of Ilion's comprehensive plan puts Steele Creek, from the Town of German Flatts through to the Mohawk River and Barge Canal, in the 100-year flood zone, along with a large 100-year flood zone starting near the village's western edge, and notes that many vacant parcels near the river sit in floodplains. Flood is a separate policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private carrier, and business income usually pays only after damage from a covered cause, so ask how each quote treats flood.
