Business insurance in Schenectady County
Schenectady County's development authority, Metroplex, works along the Route 5 and Route 7 corridors with an emphasis on downtown Schenectady, and its site features Mohawk Harbor and business parks in Glenville and Rotterdam. Here's what a business in the county usually needs, the county filings and permits that touch insurance, and the town page with the local detail.
A Schenectady County small business needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. A sole proprietor trading under a business name files a DBA with the County Clerk at 620 State Street. Contractors working in a county right-of-way need a county highway work permit, which asks for a protective liability policy covering the County, a workers' comp certification and a permit bond. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video.
What's different about insuring a business in Schenectady County
- Business names. A sole proprietor trading under an assumed name files the County Clerk's DBA form at 620 State Street, partners use the multiparty form, and the Clerk's staff will witness the signature. Keep the policy's name in step with the certificate. New LLC? See business insurance for a new LLC.
- Work on county roads. A county highway work permit asks for more than a certificate: a protective liability policy covering the County, a workers' comp certification and a permit bond. Oversized and overweight loads need a hauling permit. See contractor insurance, trucking and certificate requests.
- Business parks and Mohawk Harbor. Metroplex's site features the Glenville Business and Technology Park, the Rotterdam Corporate Park and Mohawk Harbor. Tenants sign leases that set limits and additional insureds; manufacturers and distributors add product liability and inland marine. See commercial property.
- Downtown and the corridors. Metroplex concentrates on downtown Schenectady and the Route 5 and Route 7 corridors, where shops, restaurants and offices lease space. My Schenectady page covers the city's restaurants, corner stores, repair shops and contractors.
- Farms and the farmers market. The County's planning pages cover an agricultural district and a farmers market. Selling to the public adds product and premises liability, and markets often ask for a certificate naming them.
What Schenectady County businesses carry
Required by New York
Workers' compensation from the first employee, part-time and seasonal staff included, and DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked for you 30 days in a calendar year. Business vehicles need commercial auto.
Required by your landlord and clients
General liability naming them as additional insured, or a business owners policy that packages liability with property and lost income. Restaurants and bars add liquor liability under the Dram Shop Act, and contractors working at height carry Scaffold Law exposure.
Worth adding
Flood insurance if FEMA's map puts your address in a flood zone, since commercial property excludes flood; cyber for card payments and client data, employment practices liability once you have staff, and a commercial umbrella above general liability and auto.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.
I'm a sole proprietor using a business name. Where do I file it, and does it matter for insurance?
Under General Business Law §130, an individual or partnership doing business under an assumed name files a certificate with the county clerk in each county where the business is conducted; corporations and LLCs file with the Department of State instead. The Schenectady County Clerk, at 620 State Street, posts a DBA form for individuals, a multiparty form for partners and a discontinuance form. Sign it in front of a notary or Commissioner of Deeds; the Clerk's staff will witness it at no charge. For insurance, put the name exactly as you trade under it on the policy, so certificates and claims match. If you formed an LLC instead, my LLC guide covers what changes.
What does Schenectady County ask for before I work in a county right-of-way?
A highway work permit from Engineering and Public Works. The permit asks for a protective liability policy that covers the County of Schenectady's liability for everything done under the permit, with notice to the County before it is changed or cancelled, a certification that you carry workers' comp, and a permit bond payable to the County. A protective policy is written for the job, separate from your own general liability, so ask for it when you price the work. Once the policies are in force, I get you the certificates.
Is the permit bond the same as insurance?
No. The bond guarantees the County that you'll follow its standards and pay back costs it incurs if you don't; the surety can come back to you for anything it pays. Insurance pays for injury and damage claims. The County's permit asks for both, so line them up together.
My business is in one of the business parks in Glenville or Rotterdam. What does the lease usually want?
General liability with the landlord named as additional insured by endorsement, property cover for your improvements and contents, and often a waiver of subrogation. Manufacturers and distributors add product liability, equipment breakdown and inland marine for goods in transit. Send me the insurance section of the lease, and I'll show you what each quote meets.
Do you meet businesses in Schenectady County?
Yes. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video, and handle certificates, audits and claims myself afterward.
