Business insurance in Albany County

Albany County has two ports, the region's international airport and two interstates, and its development alliance points to logistics, technology, life sciences and clean energy. Here's what a business in the county usually needs, the county filings and permits that touch insurance, and the town pages with the local detail.

In short

An Albany County small business needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. A sole proprietor or partnership trading under a business name files a DBA with the Albany County Clerk. Contractors doing new work in a county highway's right-of-way need a county permit, with a general liability certificate listing Albany County and its officers and employees as additional insured and proof of workers' comp. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video.

What's different about insuring a business in Albany County

  • Business names. A sole proprietor or partnership trading under an assumed name files a DBA with the County Clerk on Eagle Street, and the bank will want a certified copy. Once filed, it's a public record. The policy should carry the same name. New LLC? See business insurance for a new LLC.
  • Work on county roads. New driveways, sidewalks, drainage, signs and repaving in a county right-of-way need a county highway work permit, and the County wants to be named as additional insured, with its officers and employees, not just listed as certificate holder. See contractor insurance and certificate requests.
  • Ports, rail and the interstates. The county's development alliance points to the Port of Albany, the Port of Coeymans, three freight railroads, Albany International Airport, I-90 and I-87. Haulers and warehouses working around them need trucking, inland marine and a commercial umbrella, and oversized loads need a county hauling permit.
  • Technology, life sciences and clean energy. The same alliance names advanced electronics, IT and software, life sciences and healthcare, and offshore wind components as target sectors. Their suppliers and consultants sign contracts that set limits and additional insureds, and need professional liability and cyber.

What Albany County businesses carry

Required by New York

Workers' compensation from the first employee, part-time and seasonal staff included, and DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked for you 30 days in a calendar year. Permits from the County and the towns need proof of both. Business vehicles need commercial auto.

Required by your landlord and clients

General liability naming them as additional insured, or a business owners policy that packages liability with property and lost income. Restaurants and bars add liquor liability under the Dram Shop Act, and contractors working at height carry Scaffold Law exposure.

Worth adding

Flood insurance if FEMA's map puts your address in a flood zone, since commercial property excludes flood; cyber for card payments and client data, employment practices liability once you have staff, and a commercial umbrella above general liability and auto.

How I quote an Albany County business

A short conversation about what you do and what your lease, contracts or permits require; quotes from several carriers with what each leaves out, side by side; and once you choose and the policies are in force, I get you the certificates, usually the same day. Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I'm a sole proprietor using a business name. Where do I file it, and does it matter for insurance?

Under General Business Law §130, an individual or partnership doing business under an assumed name files a certificate with the county clerk in each county where the business is conducted; corporations and LLCs file with the Department of State instead. The Albany County Clerk is in the County Court House, Room 128, at 16 Eagle Street. Bring a photo ID and sign the form in front of a notary or the Clerk's staff. Banks ask for a certified copy before they open a business account. For insurance, put the name exactly as you trade under it on the policy, so certificates and claims match. If you formed an LLC instead, my LLC guide covers what changes.

What does Albany County want before I work in a county road's right-of-way?

A highway work permit from the Department of Public Works for new driveways, sidewalks, grading, drainage, signs, structural repaving, culverts and similar work on county highways, the Albany County Rail Trail or the Albany Shaker Trail. The permit asks for a general liability certificate listing Albany County and its officers and employees as additional insured, and the county says listing it only as certificate holder isn't enough. It also wants a workers' comp certificate or a CE-200 exemption, and comp and disability coverage for the whole permit. If the liability insurance lapses, the permit ends. Once your policies are in force, I get you the certificates.

I haul oversized loads on county roads. Is a permit enough?

Albany County requires a special hauling permit for oversized or overweight loads, such as modular home sections, roof trusses, cranes and pavers. The permit doesn't insure the load or the truck. You need commercial auto for the vehicle, and inland marine or motor truck cargo for the equipment or cargo, written for the weights and values you actually move.

My company supplies or services the ports, the airport or a manufacturer. What will the contract ask for?

Usually general liability and auto with the customer named as additional insured by endorsement, a waiver of subrogation, workers' comp, and an umbrella above them. Send me the insurance section of the contract before you sign it, and I'll tell you what your current policies already meet and what has to change.

Do you meet businesses in Albany County?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video, and handle certificates, audits and claims myself afterward.
