Business insurance in Rensselaer County
Rensselaer County's development office calls it home to entrepreneurs, high tech ventures and global companies, and the County promotes its farms through a farm map and product guide. Here's what a business in the county usually needs, the county filings that touch insurance, and the town pages with the local detail.
A Rensselaer County small business needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. A sole proprietor or partnership trading under a business name registers it with the County Clerk on Third Street in Troy, with every partner present to sign. The county's development office lists manufacturing, pharmaceutical and distribution projects, which bring contracts with their own insurance terms for suppliers, contractors and haulers. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video.
What's different about insuring a business in Rensselaer County
- Business names. The County Clerk in Troy registers business names in person, checks the name against its records and notarizes the signature on the spot; partners all sign together. Keep the policy's name in step with the certificate. New LLC? See business insurance for a new LLC.
- Manufacturing and distribution projects. The county IDA lists projects for a GE Healthcare manufacturing facility, a Regeneron investment, a FedEx regional distribution center and an Amazon fulfillment center. Contractors, suppliers and haulers working for them sign contracts that set limits, additional insureds and waivers. See contractors, trucking and commercial umbrella.
- Technology parks and startups. The development office points to the Greenbush Technology Park and The Bridge business accelerator in downtown Troy. Software and tech startups need professional liability and cyber before a client contract asks for them.
- Farms and farm products. The County keeps an Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan and promotes farm stands through its farm map. Selling to the public adds product and premises liability, and farm vehicles on the road need the right auto cover.
- Work on roads. The County Highway Department's page points to NYSDOT's permit system for state highways. For a county or town road, ask the highway department what certificate and additional insured wording it wants before you book the job. See certificate requests.
What Rensselaer County businesses carry
Required by New York
Workers' compensation from the first employee, part-time and seasonal staff included, and DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked for you 30 days in a calendar year. Business vehicles need commercial auto.
Required by your landlord and clients
General liability naming them as additional insured, or a business owners policy that packages liability with property and lost income. Restaurants and bars add liquor liability under the Dram Shop Act, and contractors working at height carry Scaffold Law exposure.
Worth adding
Flood insurance if FEMA's map puts your address in a flood zone, since commercial property excludes flood; inland marine for tools and equipment that travel, employment practices liability once you have staff, and a commercial umbrella above general liability and auto.

I'm a sole proprietor using a business name. Where do I file it, and does it matter for insurance?
Under General Business Law §130, an individual or partnership doing business under an assumed name files a certificate with the county clerk in each county where the business is conducted. The Rensselaer County Clerk registers business names at 105 Third Street in Troy: bring a photo ID and cash or a check, the office checks the name against its records and notarizes your signature, and in a partnership every partner has to be there. If you're incorporating, the Clerk sends you to the Department of State. For insurance, put the name exactly as you trade under it on the policy, so certificates and claims match.
I formed an LLC. Is there anything the County Clerk mentions?
The Clerk's FAQ notes that a new LLC has to publish notice for six weeks in a daily and a weekly newspaper, and that the County Legislature designates the papers, not the Clerk. Insurance doesn't change because of the LLC: the business still needs workers' comp when it hires and the liability cover its lease and clients ask for. My LLC guide goes through it.
My company supplies or services one of the big plants or distribution centers. What will the contract ask for?
Usually general liability and auto with the customer named as additional insured by endorsement, a waiver of subrogation, workers' comp, and an umbrella above them, and sometimes primary and non-contributory wording. Send me the insurance section before you sign, and I'll tell you what your current policies meet and what has to change.
I run a farm business that sells to the public. What changes?
The County promotes farm stands and farm products through its farm map and product guide. Selling at a stand or market, making a product from what you grow, and having visitors on the farm each add product and premises liability that a policy has to name, and markets often ask for a certificate naming them. Farm vehicles on the road and anyone you hire need the right auto and workers' comp cover.
Do you meet businesses in Rensselaer County?
Yes. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video, and handle certificates, audits and claims myself afterward.
