Business insurance in Saratoga County

Saratoga County describes its economy as healthcare, technology, tourism, education and entertainment, with a semiconductor campus in Malta. My office is in Clifton Park. Here's what a business here usually needs, the county filings and permits that touch insurance, and the town pages with the local detail.

In short

A Saratoga County small business needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. A sole proprietor or partnership trading under a business name files a DBA with the County Clerk in Ballston Spa, in every county where it does business. Contractors working in a county right-of-way need a permit, and the County wants to be named as additional insured by endorsement, with workers' comp shown on the certificate. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video.

What's different about insuring a business in Saratoga County

  • Business names. A sole proprietor or partnership trading under an assumed name files with the County Clerk in Ballston Spa, and again in every other county where it does business, so a contractor who also works in Albany County files in both. Keep the policy's name and addresses in step with each amendment. New LLC? See business insurance for a new LLC.
  • Work on county roads. Saratoga County wants to be named as additional insured by endorsement, not only on the certificate, with exact certificate holder wording and workers' comp shown, and auto liability where the job involves vehicles. See contractor insurance and certificate requests.
  • The technology campus. The County IDA describes the Luther Forest Technology Campus as built for semiconductor and nanotechnology manufacturing, with GLOBALFOUNDRIES on site. Contractors, suppliers and haulers working there sign contracts that set limits and additional insureds; my Malta page covers the campus and Malta's permits.
  • Tourism, healthcare and education. The County names them alongside technology and entertainment. Restaurants, bars, shops and inns serving visitors need liquor liability where alcohol is served and a business owners policy; practices and consultants need professional liability. My Saratoga Springs page covers Broadway and the season.
  • Fairs and events. Food vendors at the county fairgrounds need valid health permits; the insurance comes from you. See food trucks.

What Saratoga County businesses carry

Required by New York

Workers' compensation from the first employee, part-time and seasonal staff included, and DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked for you 30 days in a calendar year. Business vehicles need commercial auto.

Required by your landlord and clients

General liability naming them as additional insured, or a business owners policy that packages liability with property and lost income. Contractors working at height carry Scaffold Law exposure.

Worth adding

Flood insurance if FEMA's map puts your address in a flood zone, since commercial property excludes flood; cyber for card payments and client data, employment practices liability once you have staff, and a commercial umbrella above general liability and auto.

How I quote a Saratoga County business

A short conversation about what you do and what your lease, contracts or permits require; quotes from several carriers with what each leaves out, side by side; and once you choose and the policies are in force, I get you the certificates, usually the same day. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video. The business gap check takes three minutes. Next door: Albany County, Schenectady County and Rensselaer County.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I'm a sole proprietor using a business name. Where do I file it, and does it matter for insurance?

Under General Business Law §130, an individual or partnership doing business under an assumed name files a certificate with the county clerk in each county where the business is conducted. The Saratoga County Clerk, at 40 McMaster Street in Ballston Spa, takes the Certificate of Conducting Business Under Assumed Name. It needs a physical address, not a P.O. box, and filing doesn't give you sole use of the name, so search the County's records first. An LLC files with the Department of State instead; my LLC guide covers what changes. For insurance, put the name exactly as you trade under it on the policy, so certificates and claims match.

I changed my business address or took on a partner. Do I need to tell anyone?

The County Clerk wants an Amended Business Certificate when the partners, the business name or the address change, and a Certificate of Discontinuance when you close. Tell me at the same time: a new location has to be listed on the policy, and a new partner or name changes who the policy insures and what the certificates say.

What does Saratoga County want on a certificate for work in a county right-of-way?

The Public Works insurance sheet asks for the County of Saratoga named as additional insured under Description of Operations, an additional insured endorsement attached to each certificate, exact certificate holder wording with the County's Ballston Spa address, auto liability where the work involves vehicles, and workers' comp shown. The construction permit also names the Commissioner of Public Works as additional insured. If something is missing, the County says the review may be delayed or the permit denied. Once your policies are in force, I get you the certificates with the endorsement attached.

I sell food at the county fairgrounds or events. What do I need?

The County Health Department regulates agricultural fairgrounds and says food services not run by the fairground owner need valid permits. Insurance is separate: general liability with products cover, the organizer named as additional insured if they ask, commercial auto for the truck or trailer, and workers' comp for anyone who works with you. See the food truck page.

Do you meet businesses in Saratoga County?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video, and handle certificates, audits and claims myself afterward.
