Business insurance in Clifton Park and Halfmoon
This is home base. The businesses here are the trades working the subdivisions, the crews who mow in summer and plow in winter, the shops in the plazas and a lot of people running a business from a spare room. Here's what each usually needs and where the gaps tend to be.
Clifton Park and Halfmoon businesses are mostly service and retail: contractors and trades working the subdivisions, landscapers who plow the same lots in winter, the plazas along Route 146 and Route 9, restaurants at Clifton Park Center, and a lot of professionals working from home. Each needs workers' compensation from the first employee and DBL/Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for landlords and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. Three gaps to check: snow plowing excluded from a landscaper's liability policy, tools covered only at the shop, and home businesses relying on a homeowners policy. My office is in Clifton Park, off Exit 9.
What's different about insuring a business in Clifton Park and Halfmoon
- Trades working the subdivisions. Plumbers, electricians, roofers, remodelers and painters working the neighborhoods off Route 146 and Moe Road and the newer builds in Halfmoon. General contractors check your certificate and endorsements, and New York's Scaffold Law makes a fall from height an expensive claim. See contractor insurance.
- Landscapers who plow. The same crew and truck, two very different liability exposures. Snow and ice removal is the line most often missing from a landscaper's policy. See landscaping and snow plowing insurance.
- The plazas on Route 146 and Route 9. Shops, salons, restaurants and offices that lease their space: the lease decides the liability limits, the additional insureds and often the property terms. Clifton Park's comprehensive plan calls the Route 146 and Exit 9 area the town's commercial center and the Exit 9, Route 9 and Route 146 corridor its principal commercial growth corridor; Halfmoon's plan describes retail, restaurants and other businesses along Route 9, Route 236 and Guideboard Road, from big-box stores to strip plazas, and business park uses along Route 146. See retail shop insurance and business owners policy.
- Home businesses. Consultants, bookkeepers, designers, online sellers. The homeowners policy covers little or none of the business, and the gap shows up only at claim time.
- Tools in the truck. A property policy covers things at your premises. Tools and equipment that travel to job sites need an inland marine floater that follows them to the job site, in transit and in storage.
- Building permits in both towns. Clifton Park takes building permit applications through its online Citizenserve portal, and its guide says a homeowner applying, or a contractor without workers' comp insurance, uploads the state's CE-200 form. Halfmoon's building permit application, which covers commercial buildings, signs and tenant setups as well as houses, asks for the contractor's insurance carrier and the dates of its C-105.2 comp form and its ACORD 25 liability certificate. New York law bars a permit for hazardous work without proof of comp. See contractor insurance and workers' compensation.
- Food trucks, tents and pop-up sales. In Clifton Park, selling from a tent, truck, van or trailer, a parking lot or a vacant lot takes a transient merchant license from the Town Clerk, with proof of liability insurance listing the Town, a hold harmless agreement and the property owner's permission; food trucks have to meet the state Fire Code, outdoor sales are barred along the roads the law lists, and a landowner may not let an unlicensed merchant use the lot. See food truck insurance and general liability.
- Peddlers and door-to-door sales. Halfmoon's vendor, hawker and peddler license asks for a certificate covering general liability and auto liability, dated to match the permit and naming the Town of Halfmoon as additional insured, plus registration and insurance for each vehicle, and a bond deposit if you take money before final delivery. Clifton Park's peddler license lists each vehicle, requires a state Health Department permit for food and a bond for advance payments. See commercial auto.
- The Mohawk River. The Mohawk forms Clifton Park's entire southern boundary, and the town's plan notes extensive floodplain areas along it, with others along streams and low-lying ground. Halfmoon's plan calls its flooding potential generally limited but notes localized flooding along tributaries where road culverts are undersized. Commercial property policies exclude flood; it's a separate policy. See commercial property and flood insurance.
What Clifton Park businesses carry
Required by New York
Workers' compensation from the first employee, and DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked for you 30 days in a calendar year. Be careful with "subs": a helper you pay by the job may count as your employee under the Workers' Compensation Board's test. Business vehicles need commercial auto.
Required by landlords and contractors
General liability with the right additional-insured endorsements, or a business owners policy that packages liability with property and lost income for a shop or office.
What your trade adds
Professional liability for anyone paid for advice or design, cyber for the business that holds client data, a commercial umbrella when a contract asks for higher limits, and employment practices liability once you have staff.
By industry
- Contractors and trades, landscapers, cleaning and janitorial
- Retail shops, salons and barbershops, restaurants
- Medical and dental offices, daycare and childcare
- Auto repair shops, trucking and delivery

Common questions
Short answers to what people ask before they call.
Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.
I run a business from my house. Does my homeowners policy cover it?
Very little of it, as a rule. Homeowners policies limit business property to a small amount and exclude liability arising from the business, so a client who trips on your steps or a laptop full of client files stolen from the car may not be covered. Depending on the work, the fix is a home-business endorsement where a carrier offers one, a business owners policy, or professional liability if clients pay for your advice. I'll tell you which fits before you buy anything.
I mow in summer and plow in winter. Is that one policy?
It can be, but only if the general liability policy includes snow and ice removal in writing; many exclude it or cap it, because slip-and-fall claims are frequent. The truck needs commercial auto that knows it carries a plow, and the mowers, blowers and plow need an equipment floater. The landscaping page goes through each piece.
Do I need workers' comp for summer help?
Yes. Seasonal, part-time and day labor are all employees under New York law, and workers' compensation covers them from the first day. DBL and Paid Family Leave follow once someone has worked for you 30 days in a calendar year.
A general contractor wants my certificate before I start. How fast can I get one?
Usually the same day once the policy is in force. Tell me who needs to be named and what wording the contract requires; additional-insured status has to be on the policy by endorsement, and I arrange that first so the certificate matches it.
I want to sell from a food truck or a tent in a Clifton Park parking lot. What do I need?
A transient merchant license from the Clifton Park Town Clerk, applied for at least four business days before your first day. The town law asks for proof of liability insurance from a company licensed in New York with the Town of Clifton Park listed on it, a signed hold harmless agreement, the property owner's written permission and a plot plan, and a food truck has to meet the state Fire Code. Outdoor sales aren't allowed along the roads the law lists, which include parts of Route 146, Clifton Country Road and Clifton Park Center Road. Your truck also needs commercial auto. Once the policies are in force, I get you the certificates for the Town.
Can we meet at my business?
Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Exit 9, and I meet owners at their shop, at the office by appointment, or by phone.
