Business insurance in Menands

Menands is a village inside the Town of Colonie, incorporated in 1924, bordering Albany on the Hudson with Watervliet to the north. Broadway (Route 32) runs through it, the Troy-Menands Bridge leaves from Broadway for South Troy, and CDTA's Route 22 runs along Broadway seven days a week. Here's what a Menands business carries and which county rules touch its insurance.

In short

A Menands small business needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. Menands is a village inside the Town of Colonie, with the Troy-Menands Bridge running from Broadway to South Troy. A sole proprietor or partnership trading under a business name files a DBA with the Albany County Clerk, and contractors working in a county highway's right-of-way need a county permit with Albany County and its officers and employees named as additional insured. My office is in Clifton Park; I meet owners at their business, at the office or by phone or video.

What's different about insuring a business in Menands

  • Broadway and the bridge. Broadway is NYS Route 32 through Menands, and the Troy-Menands Bridge carries Route 378 from an interchange on Broadway across the Hudson to South Troy, in Rensselaer County. A business whose vans and trucks work both sides of the river, or between Menands, Albany and Watervliet, needs auto liability limits that match its contracts and cover for the tools and stock on board. See commercial auto, trucking and inland marine.
  • A village inside a town, and permits. Menands has been its own village since 1924, inside the Town of Colonie. Whichever office issues your permit, New York's Workers' Compensation Law bars it from issuing one without proof of workers' comp and of disability and Paid Family Leave, or a CE-200 exemption. See workers' compensation, DBL and Paid Family Leave and certificate requests.
  • Contractors and county highways. New driveways, sidewalks, grading, drainage or signs in the right-of-way of an Albany County highway need a county highway work permit, with a general liability certificate listing Albany County and its officers and employees as additional insured, and comp and disability for the whole permit; a lapse in liability insurance ends the permit. The Scaffold Law applies to work at height. See contractor insurance, landscaping and snow plowing and handymen.
  • On the Hudson. Menands's boundary with Albany runs out to the middle of the Hudson, and the Mohawk Hudson Bike Hike Trail runs off-road through the village. Flood is excluded from commercial property policies, so check a riverside address on FEMA's flood map and price flood as its own policy; sewer backup is a separate endorsement. See commercial property.
  • Trading under a business name. A sole proprietor or partnership using a business name files a DBA with the Albany County Clerk; banks want a certified copy before opening an account. Put that exact name on the policy so certificates and claims match. See general liability and business owners policy.

What Menands businesses carry

Required by New York

Workers' compensation from the first employee, and DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked for you 30 days in a calendar year. Business vehicles need commercial auto; employees running errands in their own cars need hired and non-owned auto as well.

Required by your landlord, clients and permits

General liability naming the landlord, client or permitting authority as additional insured, in the exact wording the lease, contract or permit uses. For a shop, office or small restaurant, a business owners policy packages liability with property and lost income.

Worth adding

Liquor liability for any restaurant or bar that serves, because general liability excludes Dram Shop claims; flood cover for a building in a flood hazard area; cyber for card payments and client data; professional liability for consultants and offices paid for advice; employment practices liability once you have staff; and a commercial umbrella when a lease or contract asks for higher limits.

How I quote a Menands business

A short conversation about what you do, where, with how many people and vehicles, and what your lease, contracts and permits require; quotes from several carriers with what each leaves out, side by side; and once the policies are in force, I get you the certificates for your landlord, clients or the permit office. Afterward, one number for certificates, audits and claims. The business gap check takes three minutes. County filings and permits are on the Albany County business insurance page; nearby: Albany · Watervliet · Latham and Colonie · Troy.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

Will a Menands permit need proof of workers' comp?

Yes. New York's Workers' Compensation Law §57 bars any state or municipal office from issuing a permit until an insurance carrier proves the employees are covered, and the Workers' Compensation Board says §220 does the same for disability and Paid Family Leave. If you're exempt, the Board's CE-200 takes the place of the certificates. Once the policies are in force, I get you the certificates in the exact name the permit office asks for.

I'm doing driveway or sidewalk work along a county road. What does Albany County need?

A non-utility highway work permit from the Albany County Department of Public Works for new work in the right-of-way of a county highway, such as a new driveway, sidewalk, grading, drainage or sign. The application asks for a general liability certificate listing Albany County and its officers and employees as additional insured, since naming the county only as certificate holder is not enough, and a workers' comp certificate or CE-200. Compensation and disability coverage have to last the whole permit, and a lapse in liability insurance ends the permit. Oversized or overweight loads on county highways need a special hauling permit.

I trade under a business name. Where do I file it?

A sole proprietor or partnership files a DBA, or assumed business name, with the Albany County Clerk at the County Court House on Eagle Street in Albany; the Clerk's staff can witness your signature, and banks want a certified copy before opening a business account. A filed DBA is a public document. Put that exact name on your policies so certificates and claims match.

My building is near the Hudson. Is flood covered?

Not by a standard commercial property policy; flood is excluded. Look the address up on FEMA's flood map and, if it makes sense, price a separate flood policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private carrier, for the building or your improvements and the contents. Ask how each quote treats lost income after a flood, because business income cover is written to pay after physical damage from a covered cause.

Are you in Menands?
