Medicare agent for Menands

Menands is a village inside the Town of Colonie, bordering Albany on the Hudson, with Watervliet to the north. The Troy-Menands Bridge crosses from Broadway to South Troy, in another county. The nearby hospitals belong to two systems that contract with carriers separately, so a Medicare plan here starts with which doctors you use and which side of the river you live on.

Where Menands residents get care

The hospitals around Menands belong to two health systems, and each contracts with Medicare Advantage carriers on its own:

  • St. Peter's Health Partners — St. Peter's Hospital, 315 South Manning Boulevard in Albany (518-525-1550), and Samaritan Hospital, 2215 Burdett Avenue in Troy (518-271-3300), across the Hudson, which follow the same carrier list. The system also runs Albany Memorial Hospital at 600 Northern Boulevard in Albany (518-471-3221).
  • Albany Med Health System — Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue in Albany (518-262-3125), the region's academic medical center, with its own carrier list.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists and the hospital they admit to all have to be in the plan's directory for the year, and a doctor in one system and a specialist in the other can leave a gap. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. The pages for St. Peter's, Samaritan and Albany Med show which carriers each one lists, and one page has them side by side; I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Menands

  • A village inside a town. The Village of Menands was incorporated in 1924 and lies within the Town of Colonie. It shares a boundary with the City of Albany that runs out to the middle of the Hudson, and Watervliet lies to its north. That gives Menands two layers of local help: the Town of Colonie's Senior Resources Department, whose staff are certified New York health insurance counsellors, and the Albany County Department for Aging, which runs HIICAP. Both are in the box below.
  • The bridge is a county line. The Troy-Menands Bridge carries Route 378 over the Hudson from an interchange at Broadway (Route 32) in Menands to South Troy, which is in Rensselaer County. Menands sees the Albany County plan list: 57 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027; Rensselaer County has its own, with 57 plans. A move across the river can change which plans you can keep: a move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. CDTA's Route 22 runs seven days a week along Broadway between the Empire State Plaza in Albany and downtown Troy, with stops at Broadway & Wards Lane, the Riverview Center station at I-787 Exit 6, Broadway & Menand Road and Broadway & Glenwood Road. For residents 60 and over with no other way to get to vital appointments, the county arranges rides through CDTA ACCESS (518-437-5161, at least 48 hours ahead; dialysis and medical visits first, rides depend on availability), and the Town of Colonie lists ACCESS trips to medical appointments in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Medigap is priced by region. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129; if yours starts with one of those, the current premiums for the region apply to you. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Meeting in Menands

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I come to Menands clients at home, meet at the office, or talk by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and which system they're in, your prescriptions, and any NYSHIP, retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Menands plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including which hospital they admit to: St. Peter's, Samaritan, Albany Memorial or Albany Med.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. NYSHIP, retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

Menands is in the Town of Colonie. Does that change which plans I can get?

No. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county, and the Village of Menands and the Town of Colonie are both in Albany County, so you choose from the Albany County list. Troy, across the Troy-Menands Bridge, is in Rensselaer County and has a list of its own. What matters next is whether your doctors and hospital are in the directory of the Albany County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Menands use?

It depends on the plan and on your doctors. St. Peter's Hospital and Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany and Samaritan Hospital in Troy belong to St. Peter's Health Partners; Albany Medical Center belongs to the Albany Med Health System. The two systems contract with carriers separately, so a plan can include one and not the other. I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory before we compare anything else.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments?

Albany County's Department for Aging arranges rides through CDTA ACCESS for county residents 60 and over who have no other way to get to vital appointments, with dialysis and medical appointments first in line. Call 518-437-5161 at least 48 hours ahead; rides depend on availability. The Town of Colonie lists ACCESS trips to medical appointments in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties. On regular buses, CDTA Route 22 runs along Broadway between Albany and Troy seven days a week. When you rely on rides or the bus, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Menands residents?

Two places. The Albany County Department for Aging at 420 Western Avenue in Albany (518-447-7198) runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program; one-on-one sessions are booked at 518-447-7177. The Town of Colonie's Senior Resources Department at 12 Metro Park Road says its staff are certified New York health insurance counsellors and helps with applications for the Medicare Savings Program, Medicaid and EPIC at 518-459-5051, ext. 2. Neither sells plans. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards.

Do you meet Menands clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I come to you at home in Menands, or we meet at the office. If it suits you better, we can do the first call by phone or WhatsApp and the full review by video.
