Medicare help in Latham and Colonie
Colonie is the biggest town in Albany County and the one where the two hospital systems sit closest together: St. Peter's and Albany Med both have practices along Route 9 and Route 7, and Samaritan is across the river in Troy. That's good news for choice and bad news for anyone who assumes their doctors are all in one network.
Where Latham and Colonie residents get care
Route 9 and Route 7 are lined with practices from both Albany systems, and they admit to different hospitals:
- St. Peter's Health Partners — St. Peter's Family Medicine at 713 Troy-Schenectady Road and St. Peter's Internal Medicine at 582 New Loudon Road, among others. Admissions go to St. Peter's Hospital on South Manning Boulevard in Albany, about ten minutes down Route 9, or to Samaritan in Troy.
- Albany Med Health System — EmUrgentCare at 1019 New Loudon Road and physician practices across Colonie. Admissions go to Albany Medical Center on New Scotland Avenue.
- Community Care Physicians — the large multi-specialty group with Latham offices at 6 Wellness Way; its doctors admit to more than one hospital, so the question is which one yours uses.
- Across the river — Samaritan Hospital in Troy is closer than either Albany hospital for parts of Latham and Cohoes; it belongs to St. Peter's Health Partners, so it follows the St. Peter's carrier list.
The Medicare Advantage problem I see most in Colonie is a plan that includes the Latham primary-care office but not the specialist in Albany, because the two systems contract with carriers independently and the overlap changes every January. The fix is boring: check the directory before you enroll. The 2026 lists of Advantage carriers Albany Med, St. Peter's and Ellis each accept are on one page; every plan sold in Albany County this year is on the county plan list.
What's particular about Latham and Colonie
- Retiree coverage from three directions. Colonie sits between the state offices in Albany and GE in Schenectady, and its retirees carry NYSHIP, GE arrangements, school-district plans and union plans in large numbers. Each one interacts differently with an individual Medicare plan; whether a plan adds to that coverage or cancels it is the first question, before premiums, before extras. - Albany County pricing, Saratoga County neighbors. Latham is ten minutes from Clifton Park and in a different county. Advantage plans are filed by county, so the two line-ups differ, and the Medigap premiums are the Albany-region figures. - Senior housing along Route 9 and Wolf Road. Independent and assisted living communities in Colonie and Loudonville each have their own arrangements for visiting physicians and pharmacy delivery; the plan has to match those, not just the hospital.

Colonie Senior Service Centers runs the Beltrone Living Center at 6 Winners Circle (518-459-2857): community dining, transportation, adult day programs and the town's senior activity center. Free, unbiased Medicare counselling for Colonie residents is through the Albany County Department for Aging at 162 Washington Avenue in Albany (HIICAP), by phone or appointment. My primary care doctor is in Latham and my cardiologist is at Albany Med. Which plans work?
It depends on which system the Latham practice belongs to. St. Peter's Health Partners and Albany Med both have offices in Latham, and each system publishes its own list of accepted Medicare Advantage carriers, which overlap but don't match. If your doctors sit in both systems, a PPO or Original Medicare with a Medigap policy is usually the safer structure; I check each doctor against the specific plan's directory before we compare anything else.
I retired from GE and live in Colonie. Does that change the Medicare answer?
Usually, yes. Many GE retiree arrangements fund an individual Medicare plan through a reimbursement account rather than providing a group plan, which means the plan you choose has to be one the account will reimburse and the paperwork has to be done in the right order. Bring your GE retiree materials to the call; that decides the strategy before any plan comparison.
I'm a state retiree in Latham with NYSHIP. Should I look at the Advantage plans I see advertised?
Not without checking. NYSHIP requires Medicare Parts A and B once you're eligible and coordinates with them, generally reimbursing the Part B premium. Joining an outside Medicare Advantage or Part D plan can disrupt that coverage. Ask your benefits administrator before enrolling in anything, or read the NYSHIP retirees guide first.
