Medicare agent for Voorheesville and New Scotland

Voorheesville is a village in the Town of New Scotland, and for senior help the village website sends you to the town's Senior Outreach office. Neither has a hospital. Medicare choices here come down to the two Albany systems, Albany Med and St. Peter's, and whether a plan includes the one your doctors are in.

Where Voorheesville and New Scotland residents get care

There is no hospital in the village or the town. The two hospital systems people here use are both in Albany, and they contract with carriers separately:

  • Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue, Albany (518-262-3125) — the region's academic medical center and the flagship of the Albany Med Health System.
  • St. Peter's Hospital, 315 South Manning Boulevard, Albany (518-525-1550) — part of St. Peter's Health Partners, with its own primary-care and specialty practices.

If your primary-care doctor is in one system and a cardiologist or surgeon in the other, with a Medicare Advantage HMO both have to be in the plan's directory for the year, and the overlap can change every January. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Every plan sold in Albany County is placed against each hospital's carrier list on the Albany Medical Center and St. Peter's Hospital pages, and the lists for every Capital Region hospital are side by side on one page. I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Voorheesville and New Scotland

  • The town's rides set the radius. New Scotland's Senior Transportation Service takes residents 62 and older who live independently to medical appointments, curb to curb, within a moderate radius of Town Hall. Volunteers do the driving, there is currently one vehicle for medical rides, and bookings need five to seven days' notice. If that's how you get to the doctor, a plan's network has to include doctors within that radius, not just somewhere in Albany County. The town also asks riders to register with CDTA Access, which works alongside it.
  • Slingerlands on the envelope, Albany County on the plan list. New Scotland's own Town Hall at 2029 New Scotland Road has a Slingerlands mailing address. Plans follow the county, not the post office, and the 12186 and 12159 ZIP areas lie entirely in Albany County, which has 57 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • One weekday bus into Albany. The village website's public transportation link is CDTA route 519, which starts at Maple Avenue and Voorheesville Avenue and runs on weekdays only, by way of the Elm Avenue Park & Ride, to the Empire State Plaza and downtown Albany.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Voorheesville (12186) and Slingerlands (12159). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Meeting in Voorheesville and New Scotland

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I come to Voorheesville and New Scotland clients at home, or we talk by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and which system they're in, your prescriptions, and any NYSHIP, retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Voorheesville plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, with attention to the Albany Med and St. Peter's split.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. NYSHIP, retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

No fee for Medicare plan help. Request a review, or read the wider Medicare page for all of Albany County. Also in Albany County: Guilderland and Bethlehem and Delmar.

Questions

Common questions

I use the Town of New Scotland's senior rides to get to my doctors. Does that matter for my Medicare plan?

It can. The town's Senior Transportation Service is for independently living New Scotland residents 62 and older, runs curb to curb within a moderate radius of Town Hall with volunteer drivers, and puts chemotherapy, radiation, dialysis and hospital appointments first. It needs five to seven days' notice, and there is currently one vehicle for medical rides. With Medicare Advantage, the doctors you can reach that way also have to be in the plan's directory for the year, so I check each one by name.

New Scotland Town Hall has a Slingerlands address. Which plans can I get?

Albany County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county, not by post office name. The Census Bureau's ZIP-to-county file puts all of the land in Voorheesville's 12186 and Slingerlands' 12159 ZIP areas in Albany County, so every address here sees the same Albany County plan list.

Do Medicare Advantage plans here cover both Albany Med and St. Peter's?

Some do and some don't, and it can change every January. Albany Med and St. Peter's Health Partners contract with carriers separately, and each publishes a list of carriers, not plans. If your primary care is with one system and a specialist with the other, I check both doctors by name in the specific plan's directory before we compare anything else. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Voorheesville and New Scotland?

The Albany County Department for Aging at 420 Western Avenue in Albany (518-447-7198) runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling. The statewide line, 1-800-701-0501, routes you to it. For town programs, call New Scotland's Senior Outreach office at 518-439-9038. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Voorheesville and New Scotland clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I come to you at home in Voorheesville or anywhere in New Scotland. A first conversation can be by phone or WhatsApp, and full reviews work well by video when that's easier.
