Medicare agent in Watervliet and Green Island

Watervliet runs along the west bank of the Hudson with Troy across the river, and Green Island sits on three islands between the Hudson and the Mohawk. Both are in Albany County, so both see the Albany County plan list, while Samaritan Hospital is across the river in Troy and the other hospitals are in Albany.

Where Watervliet and Green Island residents get care

Neither Watervliet nor Green Island has a hospital, and the hospitals nearby belong to two health systems that contract with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:

  • St. Peter's Health Partners — Samaritan Hospital, 2215 Burdett Avenue in Troy (518-271-3300), across the Hudson, and St. Peter's Hospital, 315 South Manning Boulevard in Albany (518-525-1550), which follow the same carrier list. The system's Latham Primary Care Associates, at 1 Bell Tower Drive off Delatour Road (518-268-6390), has a Watervliet address and offers adult and geriatric care, and Albany Memorial Hospital at 600 Northern Boulevard in Albany (518-471-3221) is a stop on CDTA's Route 182.
  • Albany Med Health System — Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue in Albany (518-262-3125), the region's academic medical center, with its own carrier list.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists and the hospital they admit to all have to be in the plan's directory for the year; a doctor in Troy and a specialist in Albany can belong to different systems. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. The pages for Samaritan, St. Peter's and Albany Med show which carriers each one lists, and one page has them side by side; I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Watervliet and Green Island

  • The river is a county line. Watervliet runs along the west bank of the Hudson, with the Town of Colonie around it on three sides, Cohoes and Green Island to the north and Menands to the south. Green Island's village and town share the same boundaries, on three islands between the Hudson and the Mohawk. Both see the Albany County plan list: 57 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Troy, across the river, is the seat of Rensselaer County, with 57 plans of its own. A move across the river can change which plans you can keep: a move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. The county's Department for Aging arranges rides through CDTA ACCESS for Albany County residents 60 and over who have no other way to get to vital appointments, with dialysis and medical visits first in line (518-437-5161, at least 48 hours ahead; rides depend on availability). The same line handles STAR paratransit and CDTA's half-fare Navigator card. On regular buses, Route 22 runs seven days a week along Broadway between the Empire State Plaza in Albany and downtown Troy, with a stop CDTA names for the Senior Citizen Center; Route 182 runs from Troy through Watervliet, Green Island and Cohoes to Albany; and the BusPlus Blue Line stops at Watervliet's 19th Street station. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those routes reach.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Watervliet (12189) and Green Island (12183). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Meeting in Watervliet and Green Island

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, a drive down the Northway. I meet Watervliet and Green Island clients there, at home, or by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Watervliet or Green Island plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including which hospital they admit to: Samaritan, St. Peter's or Albany Med.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

My hospital is Samaritan, across the river in Troy. Does that make my plan list Rensselaer County's?

No. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live. Watervliet and Green Island are in Albany County, so you choose from the Albany County list, even though Troy, across the Hudson, is the seat of Rensselaer County and has its own list. What matters is whether Samaritan and your doctors are in the directory of the Albany County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Watervliet and Green Island use?

Neither has a hospital of its own. Samaritan Hospital in Troy and St. Peter's Hospital in Albany belong to St. Peter's Health Partners and follow one carrier list; Albany Medical Center publishes its own. A plan can include one system and not the other, so I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory before we compare anything else.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments?

Albany County's Department for Aging uses CDTA ACCESS to arrange rides for county residents 60 and over who have no other way to get to vital appointments, with dialysis and medical appointments among the priorities. Call 518-437-5161 at least 48 hours ahead; rides depend on availability. On regular buses, Route 22 runs along Broadway between Albany and Troy, and Route 182 runs from Troy through Watervliet, Green Island and Cohoes to Albany, stopping at Albany Memorial Hospital. When you rely on the bus, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Watervliet and Green Island residents?

The Albany County Department for Aging at 420 Western Avenue in Albany (518-447-7198) runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program; one-on-one sessions are booked at 518-447-7177. It covers every plan and sells nothing. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Watervliet and Green Island clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, a drive down the Northway, and I also come to you at home in Watervliet or Green Island. A first conversation can be by phone or WhatsApp; full reviews work well by video when that's easier.
