Which Medicare Advantage plans does Samaritan Hospital accept?

The hospital publishes its answer at carrier level; Medicare sells plans. This page joins the two: Samaritan's own list, quoted with dates, and every 2026 plan sold in Rensselaer County placed against it, so you can see which plans need a closer look before you enroll, and which need a phone call first.

In short

Samaritan Hospital is part of St. Peter's Health Partners, and its accepted-insurance list, read September 21, 2026, names CDPHP, MVP Health Care, Highmark Blue Shield of Northeastern NY, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Wellcare, Fidelis Care, Empire BlueCross BlueShield (Anthem), Trinity Health Plan of New York, Nascentia Health Plus and VNS Health for Medicare Advantage, lists EmblemHealth with the note that not all of their plans participate, and states that Humana Medicare plans are not accepted (Medicare plans no longer participating effective Jan 1, 2025). A carrier on the list does not mean every plan it sells includes the hospital, and a carrier missing from it is unverified, not excluded; the specific plan's provider directory is the final check. The table below puts each of the 59 Medicare Advantage plans sold in Rensselaer County for 2026 under the hospital's own wording. Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap policy, is accepted at Samaritan Hospital without any of this.

Samaritan's list, 2026

Samaritan Hospital in Troy is part of St. Peter's Health Partners, which publishes one accepted-insurance list for its hospitals (St. Peter's Hospital (Albany), Samaritan Hospital (Troy), Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital (Schenectady), St. Peter's Health Partners Medical Associates). Samaritan Hospital in Troy is part of St. Peter's Health Partners and shares the system's accepted-insurance list, including the Humana Medicare exclusion effective January 1, 2025. For Rensselaer County residents the practical point is the river: a plan that includes Samaritan does not automatically include Albany Medical Center, which is on a different system's list.

What the list says about Medicare Advantage carriers, read September 21, 2026:

  • Listed: CDPHP; MVP Health Care; Highmark Blue Shield of Northeastern NY; Aetna; UnitedHealthcare (Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital does not participate in UHC Medicare plans); Wellcare; Fidelis Care; Empire BlueCross BlueShield (Anthem); Trinity Health Plan of New York (the system's own Medicare Advantage plan); Nascentia Health Plus (listed as VNA Home Care Options, LLC (Nascentia Health); Trinity Health Anesthesia Group of New York does not participate); VNS Health (listed as VNSNY Choice; Trinity Health Anesthesia Group of New York does not participate).
  • Listed, not all plans: EmblemHealth (physician services only; commercial and Medicare Advantage). The hospital itself adds that note, so the specific plan matters more than usual here.
  • Not accepted: Humana (Medicare plans no longer participating effective Jan 1, 2025).
  • Not on the list: Hamaspik Medicare Select. Absent from the page as read, which is a reason to verify with the plan and the hospital, not proof of exclusion.

Source: Accepted insurance (St. Peter's Health Partners), read September 21, 2026. The list covers hospital facility services; hospital-based physician groups (anesthesia, radiology, pathology, emergency) bill separately and may participate in different plans, and a physician office's own insurance list is not the hospital's.

Every 2026 Medicare Advantage plan sold in Rensselaer County, against Samaritan's list

59 plans, from the CMS Medicare Advantage and Part D landscape file, contract year 2026, read September 21, 2026. Each plan is placed under the hospital's wording for its carrier: 51 listed, 2 listed with the "not all plans" note, 5 from a carrier the hospital states it does not accept, 1 from carriers not on the list. The last column shows which plans I can enroll you in; the rest are listed so the field is complete. Premiums, copays, extras and star ratings are left off on purpose; they are in each plan's own documents and on medicare.gov/plan-compare.

"Listed" means the plan's carrier appears on the hospital's list; it does not mean this plan's network includes Samaritan Hospital. "Not accepted" is the hospital's own statement about the carrier, with its date. "Not on the list" means the carrier is absent from the page as read, which is unverified, not excluded. Plans are filed by county, so this is the Rensselaer County list; a plan sold here may not be sold in the next county. Special-needs plans (D-SNP, C-SNP, I-SNP) are only for people who qualify.

Confirm before you rely on any of it

Two checks, both by name, before you enroll or stay in a plan because of Samaritan: look up Samaritan Hospital in the plan's own provider directory (not the carrier's general one), and call the hospital's billing office with the exact plan name. Then do the same for each doctor you see, because a hospital contract and a physician contract are separate. Lists change between enrollment periods; the Humana changes in this region happened in June 2024 and January 2025, not on January 1. I re-read the hospital's page each October before the Annual Enrollment Period and update this page; the dates above say when it was last read.

The route that needs no list

Original Medicare has no network, and Samaritan Hospital participates in it. Paired with a Medigap policy, which in New York can be bought in any month without health questions, it covers Samaritan, the other Capital Region hospitals and hospitals anywhere in the country; it costs more per month than a $0-premium Advantage plan and needs a separate Part D plan. If you are in an Advantage plan today, leaving it for Original Medicare happens only in an enrollment period, and the Medigap and Part D start dates have to line up with the disenrollment; the enrollment check shows which window is open. The trade-offs are in Advantage vs Medigap in New York; current Albany-region Medigap premiums are on the rates page.

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Does Samaritan Hospital accept Medicare?

Yes. Samaritan Hospital participates in Original Medicare, so anyone with Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap policy, is covered there. The question this page answers is Medicare Advantage, where it depends on the carrier and the specific plan.

Which Medicare Advantage carriers does Samaritan Hospital accept in 2026?

St. Peter's Health Partners's accepted-insurance page, read September 21, 2026, lists CDPHP, MVP Health Care, Highmark Blue Shield of Northeastern NY, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Wellcare, Fidelis Care, Empire BlueCross BlueShield (Anthem), Trinity Health Plan of New York, Nascentia Health Plus and VNS Health, plus EmblemHealth with the note that not all of their plans participate. Humana Medicare plans are stated as not accepted. That is the hospital's wording at carrier level; the specific plan still has to be checked in its own provider directory.

Does Samaritan Hospital take Humana Medicare Advantage?

Not according to the hospital's own list: Medicare plans no longer participating effective Jan 1, 2025. Emergency care is covered by every Advantage plan at in-network cost sharing wherever you are; planned care at a hospital outside the network is paid at the plan's out-of-network terms, which for an HMO usually means not at all. Members who want Samaritan need to change plans at an enrollment period, or leave Advantage for Original Medicare plus Medigap and Part D at an enrollment period.

A carrier is on Samaritan's list. Does that mean my plan is in network?

No. The hospital lists carriers; each carrier sells several plans with different networks, and St. Peter's Health Partners itself says that participating with a carrier does not mean every plan or every service is covered. Check the plan's provider directory for Samaritan Hospital by name, and for each of your doctors, before enrolling. I do that check before recommending any plan.

Why are there no premiums or star ratings in the table?

Because listing a plan's name together with its premium, benefits or star rating counts as marketing under Medicare's rules and has to be filed with each carrier first. Plan names and types alone do not. The figures are on medicare.gov/plan-compare and in each plan's Summary of Benefits, and I go through them with you against your own doctors and prescriptions.

My plan dropped Samaritan. Can I switch?

During the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) you can change Advantage plans for January 1; during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31) you can make one change if you are already in an Advantage plan; and if your plan's contract with the hospital ends mid-year, some members qualify for a special enrollment period. In New York, Medigap can be applied for in any month, so at the next election period you can leave Advantage for Original Medicare plus Medigap and a Part D plan and be covered at every hospital in the region. The enrollment check on this site shows which window is open today.

Is Samaritan Hospital in your plan?

Send me your plan name and your doctors. I check the plan's own directory for the hospital and each doctor, not just the carrier's name, and tell you whether to keep the plan, switch, or move to Medigap. No fee.
