Medicare agent for Halfmoon
Halfmoon runs from the Northway east to the Hudson and south to the Mohawk, with Waterford and Mechanicville on its borders. It has no hospital of its own, and most of the hospitals its residents use are across a river or a county line, so the first thing a Medicare plan has to fit is which way you drive for care.
Where Halfmoon residents get care
Halfmoon has no hospital, and the hospitals people here are admitted to belong to three different health systems:
- Samaritan Hospital, 2215 Burdett Avenue, Troy (518-271-3300) — across the Hudson in Troy. It is part of St. Peter's Health Partners, along with St. Peter's Hospital at 315 South Manning Boulevard in Albany (518-525-1550), and the two follow the same accepted-carrier list.
- Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue, Albany (518-262-3125) — the region's academic medical center. It shares one carrier list with Saratoga Hospital at 211 Church Street in Saratoga Springs (518-587-3222) as members of the Albany Med Health System, but being in the same system does not guarantee the same plan contracts for every practice.
- Ellis Medicine — the Medical Center of Clifton Park at 103 Sitterly Road (518-579-2800), with walk-in emergent care seven days a week, primary care, imaging and lab. Admissions go to Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, and Ellis contracts with carriers on its own.
If your primary-care doctor is in one system and a cardiologist or surgeon in another, with a Medicare Advantage HMO both have to be in the plan's directory for the year; Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Every plan sold in Saratoga County is placed against Saratoga Hospital's own list on the Saratoga Hospital page. The pages for Samaritan, St. Peter's, Albany Med and Ellis show which carriers each one lists, and the carriers for all of them are side by side on one page; for a Saratoga County plan I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.
What's particular about Halfmoon
- The Senior Express decides where "nearby" is. The town funds a free van for Halfmoon residents 55 and over. It runs to local doctors in Halfmoon and Clifton Park on weekdays and to out-of-town doctor appointments in Albany, Cohoes, Latham, Malta, Saratoga, Schenectady, Troy and Waterford on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, booked a week ahead. If that's how you get to appointments, the plan's network has to include doctors in those places, not just somewhere in the county.
- Waterford on the envelope, Saratoga County on the plan list. Parts of Halfmoon get mail addressed to Waterford; the town's own senior center on Lower Newtown Road is one of them. Plans follow the county, not the post office, so every Halfmoon address sees the Saratoga County list: 52 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027.
- Two rivers, two more counties. Cross the Mohawk into Cohoes and you're in Albany County (57 plans for 2027); cross the Hudson into Troy and you're in Rensselaer County (57 plans). Neighbors who use the same hospital can be choosing from different lists, and a move across either river can change which plans you can keep. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
- Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in every Halfmoon address, whether the mailing address reads Halfmoon or Waterford. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
- Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.
Halfmoon Senior Center, Senior Express and the county Office for the Aging
The Halfmoon Senior Center is at 287 Lower Newtown Road (mailing address Waterford, NY 12188); its office is open weekdays, 9 to 4, at (518) 371-3892. It is an Office for the Aging meal site, with lunch at noon for members who sign up by noon the day before. To book the Senior Express van, call the dispatcher at (518) 664-2186 at least a week ahead. Free, unbiased Medicare counselling is through the Saratoga County Office for the Aging, part of the county's Department of Aging and Youth Services at 152 West High Street in Ballston Spa (518-884-4100), which runs HIICAP by phone or appointment and can screen you for the Medicare Savings Program and EPIC; the HIICAP page has every county office. Statewide HIICAP line: 1-800-701-0501.

Meeting in Halfmoon
My office is next door in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, a few minutes across Route 9 from most of Halfmoon. I meet Halfmoon clients there, at home anywhere between the Mohawk and Mechanicville, or by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.
What a Halfmoon plan review covers
- Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including which hospital they admit to: Samaritan, St. Peter's, Albany Med, Ellis or Saratoga.
- Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
- Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
- A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.
No fee for Medicare plan help. Request a review, or read the wider Medicare page for all of Saratoga County. Next door: Waterford and Mechanicville and Stillwater.

I ride the Halfmoon Senior Express to my doctors. Does that matter for my Medicare plan?
It can. The town's free van takes Halfmoon residents 55 and over to out-of-town doctor appointments in Albany, Cohoes, Latham, Malta, Saratoga, Schenectady, Troy and Waterford, and to local doctors in Halfmoon and Clifton Park, with a week's notice. With Medicare Advantage, the doctors you can reach that way also have to be in the plan's directory for the year. I check each one by name, so you don't end up with a plan whose in-network doctors are somewhere the van doesn't go.
My address says Waterford but I live in the Town of Halfmoon. Which plans can I get?
Saratoga County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county, and the Town of Halfmoon is in Saratoga County whatever the post office name on your mail; even the Halfmoon Senior Center has a Waterford mailing address. The Town of Waterford is in Saratoga County too. Cohoes, across the Mohawk, is in Albany County, and Troy, across the Hudson, is in Rensselaer County, each with its own plan list.
Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Halfmoon use?
There isn't one in town. Depending on your doctors you'll be sent to Samaritan in Troy or St. Peter's in Albany (both St. Peter's Health Partners), Albany Medical Center, Ellis in Schenectady, or Saratoga Hospital. The two Albany Med Health System hospitals share one accepted-carrier list, St. Peter's and Samaritan share another, and Ellis has its own. A plan has to include the hospital your doctors admit to, and I check that before anything else.
Where is free Medicare counselling for Halfmoon residents?
The Saratoga County Office for the Aging at 152 West High Street in Ballston Spa (518-884-4100) runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling, by phone or appointment. The Halfmoon Senior Center on Lower Newtown Road (518-371-3892) is the town's own center and a good place to ask about programs. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.
Do you meet Halfmoon clients in person?
Yes. My office is next door in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, a few minutes across Route 9 from most of Halfmoon, and I also come to you at home in Halfmoon, Waterford or Mechanicville. A first conversation can be by phone or WhatsApp; full reviews work well by video when that's easier.
