Medicare agent for Galway

Galway is a town in the western part of Saratoga County, with a village of the same name inside it, and describes itself as a rural community of small businesses, farms and homes, with year-round and seasonal residents. The hospitals people here use are in Saratoga Springs, Schenectady and Albany, in two health systems, and the plans they choose from are Saratoga County's. So the first thing I check is whether a plan's directory includes the doctors and hospital you actually use.

Where Galway residents get care

  • Saratoga Hospital, 211 Church Street, Saratoga Springs (518-587-3222) — part of the Albany Med Health System. The Saratoga Hospital page places every plan sold in Saratoga County against the hospital's own carrier list.
  • Ellis Hospital, 1101 Nott Street, Schenectady (518-243-4000) — part of Ellis Medicine, a separate system with its own carrier list. It is in Schenectady County, but a Saratoga County plan can still include it; the Ellis Hospital page shows which carriers it lists.
  • Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue, Albany (518-262-3125) — in the Albany Med Health System with Saratoga Hospital, for specialist care your doctors may send you to.

With a Medicare Advantage plan, the hospital you would be admitted to and each doctor all have to be in that plan's directory for the year, and two plans from the same carrier can have different networks. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Which carriers each Capital Region hospital lists is on one page; I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Galway

  • A village inside a town, one plan list. The Village of Galway sits inside the Town of Galway, and both are in Saratoga County. The Census Bureau puts all of the land in the 12074 ZIP area in Saratoga County too, so every Galway address chooses from the same list: 52 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. A move to another county changes the list, and a move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Two ways to get a ride. Galway is one of the towns the Wellness Express serves: a van to medical appointments for residents 60 and over, on weekdays, booked at least a week ahead at 518-399-3262. The county's Department of Aging and Youth Services also offers rides to residents 60 and over on a contribution basis. If one of these is how you reach the doctor, the doctors in a plan's network have to be ones you can get to.
  • Lunch at Town Hall. Town Hall on Route 147 is one of the county's Gather & Dine sites, with a weekday lunch for people 60 and over who reserve by noon the day before. The town's Seniors page lists the Galway Seniors Group, which meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 1 p.m.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Galway (12074). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Meeting in Galway

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I meet Galway clients at home, in the village or anywhere else in the town, or we talk by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and whether they're in Saratoga Springs, Schenectady or Albany, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Galway plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including which hospital they admit to: Saratoga Hospital, Ellis or Albany Medical Center.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

No fee for Medicare plan help. Request a review, or read the wider Medicare page for all of Saratoga County. Nearby: Burnt Hills and Ballston Lake, Ballston Spa, Greenfield and Broadalbin. Business owners in town can read business insurance in Galway.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

Do the Village of Galway and the rest of the town have the same Medicare plans?

Yes. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county, and the village and the town are both in Saratoga County. The Census Bureau's ZIP-to-county file also puts all of the land in the Galway ZIP area, 12074, in Saratoga County. What differs from one person to the next is which plans include your doctors and price your prescriptions well. If your address is in another county, that county's list applies, whatever the post office name.

My doctors are at Saratoga Hospital or Ellis. Which plans include them?

Saratoga Hospital, at 211 Church Street in Saratoga Springs, is part of the Albany Med Health System, along with Albany Medical Center. Ellis Hospital, at 1101 Nott Street in Schenectady, is part of Ellis Medicine. Each hospital publishes a list of accepted carriers, not plans, and a carrier on the list does not mean every plan from that carrier is in network. I check the hospital and each of your doctors by name in each Saratoga County plan's directory for the year. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy there is no network to check.

Is there help getting to doctor appointments from Galway?

Galway is one of the towns served by the Wellness Express, a van to medical appointments for residents 60 and over, Monday to Friday except holidays, booked first come, first served, at least a week ahead, at 518-399-3262; contributions are voluntary. The Saratoga County Department of Aging and Youth Services also offers rides to residents 60 and over on a contribution basis (518-884-4100), and people on Medicaid book medical transportation at 1-855-852-3292. If one of these is how you reach your doctors, those doctors have to be in your plan's directory for the year.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Galway?

The Saratoga County Office for the Aging at 152 West High Street in Ballston Spa (518-884-4100) runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling, by phone or in person with a scheduled appointment. It covers every plan and sells nothing. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Galway clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I come to you at home in the village or anywhere else in the Town of Galway. We can also talk by phone, WhatsApp or video when that's easier. No fee for Medicare plan help.
