Medicare agent for Waterford

Waterford sits at the southern tip of Saratoga County, where the Mohawk meets the Hudson, with Cohoes across one river and Troy across the other. It has a St. Peter's health center but no hospital, and two county lines are a bridge away, so a Medicare plan has to fit both which way you drive for care and which county you live in.

Where Waterford residents get care

Waterford has a primary-care health center but no hospital, and the hospitals people here are admitted to belong to three different health systems:

  • St. Peter's Health Partners — the Waterford Health Center at 158 Saratoga Avenue (518-233-1162), open weekdays; Samaritan Hospital at 2215 Burdett Avenue, across the Hudson in Troy (518-271-3300); and St. Peter's Hospital at 315 South Manning Boulevard in Albany (518-525-1550). The two hospitals follow the same accepted-carrier list.
  • Albany Med Health System — Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue, Albany (518-262-3125), and Saratoga Hospital, 211 Church Street, Saratoga Springs (518-587-3222). They share one carrier list, but a shared list does not mean every practice has the same plan contracts.
  • Ellis Medicine — the Medical Center of Clifton Park at 103 Sitterly Road (518-579-2800), with walk-in emergent care from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day, primary care, imaging and lab. Admissions go to Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, and Ellis contracts with carriers on its own.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists and the hospital they admit to all have to be in the plan's directory for the year; Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Every plan sold in Saratoga County is placed against Saratoga Hospital's list on the Saratoga Hospital page, and the pages for Samaritan, St. Peter's, Albany Med and Ellis show which carriers each one lists, side by side on one page. I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Waterford

  • The senior center's van. The Waterford Community Senior Center runs a medical transport van for Waterford seniors, Monday through Thursday, to and from medical appointments, and a grocery bus on Wednesdays; both are arranged through the center at (518) 235-8500. If that's how you reach your doctors, ask the center where the van goes, and I'll make sure the plan's network has doctors there.
  • Two rivers, three counties. The Town of Waterford, with the Village inside it, is bounded by Halfmoon to the north, the Hudson to the east and the Mohawk to the south, and all of it is in Saratoga County: 52 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Cross the Mohawk into Cohoes and you're in Albany County (57 plans for 2027); cross the Hudson into Troy and you're in Rensselaer County (57 plans). A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Waterford on the envelope can mean Halfmoon. Some addresses with a Waterford, NY 12188 mailing address are in the Town of Halfmoon; the Halfmoon Senior Center on Lower Newtown Road is one. Halfmoon is in Saratoga County too, so the plan list is the same either way; the Halfmoon page covers that town's own senior van and programs.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Waterford's 12188. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Meeting in Waterford

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I meet Waterford clients there, at home in the town or the village, or by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Waterford plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the Waterford Health Center and which hospital each doctor admits to: Samaritan, St. Peter's, Albany Med, Saratoga or Ellis.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

No fee for Medicare plan help. Request a review, or read the wider Medicare page for all of Saratoga County. Nearby pages: Halfmoon, Mechanicville and Stillwater and Troy.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I ride the Waterford senior center's medical van. Does that matter for my Medicare plan?

It can. The Waterford Community Senior Center runs a medical transport van for Waterford seniors, Monday through Thursday, to and from medical appointments; call the center at (518) 235-8500 to arrange it. With Medicare Advantage, the doctors you reach that way also have to be in the plan's directory for the year. I check each one by name, along with the hospital they admit to.

I live in Waterford. Are my Medicare plans the same as in Cohoes or Troy?

No. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county. The Town and Village of Waterford are in Saratoga County; Cohoes, across the Mohawk, is in Albany County, and Troy, across the Hudson, is in Rensselaer County, each with its own plan list. Neighbors who use the same doctors can be choosing from different lists, and a move across either river can change which plans you can keep.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Waterford use?

There isn't one in town. Depending on your doctors you'll be sent to Samaritan in Troy or St. Peter's in Albany (both St. Peter's Health Partners, which also runs the Waterford Health Center on Saratoga Avenue), Albany Medical Center or Saratoga Hospital (both Albany Med Health System), or Ellis in Schenectady. Each system publishes its own list of accepted carriers. A plan has to include the hospital your doctors admit to, and I check that by name in the plan's directory.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Waterford residents?

The Saratoga County Office for the Aging, part of the Department of Aging and Youth Services at 152 West High Street in Ballston Spa (518-884-4100), runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling, by phone or in person by appointment. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Waterford clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I also come to you at home anywhere in the Town or Village of Waterford. A first conversation can be by phone or WhatsApp; full reviews work well by video when that's easier.
