Medicare agent for Otsego County

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Otsego County residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. Most Medicare choices here start with one question: how does the plan treat Bassett Medical Center, A.O. Fox Hospital and the doctors you already see?

Where Otsego County residents get care

  • Bassett Medical Center, at 1 Atwell Road in Cooperstown, (607) 547-3456, the hub of the Bassett Healthcare Network, with 24-hour emergency and trauma care.
  • A.O. Fox Hospital, at 1 Norton Avenue in Oneonta, (607) 432-2000, one of Bassett's community hospitals, with emergency services. Bassett's insurance page lists carriers for its practitioners, not individual Medicare Advantage plans, so the plan's own directory is the check.
  • Specialists elsewhere. If you also see doctors outside the Bassett network, check each one separately: a plan that lists one hospital does not automatically list the next.

Before we look at a single premium, I run every doctor you see against each plan's current directory for Otsego County.

What's particular about Otsego County

  • Its own plan list. Medicare Advantage plans are filed by county, so an Oneonta address and an address across the line in a neighbouring county can see different plan lists.
  • Distance. In the rural towns the nearest in-network doctor can be a long drive. A plan with a small local network costs you in miles, not just dollars, so we look at where the in-network providers actually are.
  • Help with costs. New York's Medicare Savings Program, Extra Help and EPIC have no asset test for the Medicare Savings Program, so they're worth checking even if you think your income is too high.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.

Medicare Advantage plans in Otsego County

Advantage plans are filed and priced by county, so the list for Otsego County is its own list. The carriers whose plans I'm authorized to offer here are the 11 on the carriers page, each with what it sells and which of the region's hospitals list it; which of their plans are sold in Otsego County changes each January. What decides the choice in this county is whether the plan lists Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown and A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, and any specialists you see outside the Bassett network — the plan's provider directory, not the carrier name, is the final check.

How a plan review works

  1. A short call by phone, WhatsApp or video: your ZIP code, your doctors, your prescriptions, any retiree or VA coverage.
  2. A written comparison of the two or three plans I'd genuinely consider for you, with total yearly cost, not just premium.
  3. If you enroll through me, I submit it and remain your contact. No fee for any of it.

If you're turning 65, start about six months out. If you're already on a plan, check it each fall during the Annual Enrollment Period. Next door: Schoharie County, Montgomery County and Herkimer County. Request a review.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Otsego County include Bassett Medical Center and A.O. Fox Hospital?

Both hospitals are part of the Bassett Healthcare Network. Bassett's participating-insurance page lists the Medicare Advantage carriers its practitioners take, and says some health plans offer products that don't include Bassett practitioners. Carriers are not plans, so before you enroll I check the hospital and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's own directory.
