Medicare agent for Cooperstown

Cooperstown is the county seat of Otsego County, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from. Bassett Medical Center, the hub of the Bassett Healthcare Network, is in the village. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Cooperstown residents by phone, WhatsApp and video.

Where Cooperstown residents get care

The network's hub hospital and its main outpatient clinic are both on one campus in the village:

  • Bassett Medical Center, at 1 Atwell Road (607-547-3456; Emergency Department 607-547-3355). Bassett describes it as a 180-bed acute care teaching hospital with 24-hour emergency and trauma care, cancer and heart care, dialysis, and most medical and surgical specialties.
  • The Bassett Clinic, on the same campus, with outpatient primary and specialty care. The clinic building has an outpatient pharmacy open on weekdays, and a patient shuttle runs between the campus parking lots and the buildings, weekdays 8 to 5 (607-547-5959).
  • A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta is one of Bassett's community hospitals, if you see doctors there as well.

Bassett's insurance page says its practitioners take part in most of the health plans in the region, but that some plans offer specific products that leave Bassett practitioners out. It lists carriers, not individual Medicare Advantage plans, so a carrier's name is not the check; the plan's own directory is. With an HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital and any rehab after a stay all have to be in that directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here; I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Cooperstown

  • One village, two towns, one list. The state's county profile lists the Village of Cooperstown as shared with the Town of Middlefield. Either way the address is in Otsego County, so it sees the Otsego County plan list: 28 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Plans are filed by county, so an address across a county line can see a different list even when the doctors are the same.
  • Getting to appointments. The Otsego County Office for the Aging arranges non-emergency rides to and from pre-scheduled medical appointments, and rides to pick up prescriptions (607-547-4232; it depends on availability). There is no charge, contributions are suggested, and no one is turned away for not paying. Oneonta Public Transit's Cooperstown route runs between Oneonta and the village with stops at Fox Care and Bassett, on weekdays and some Saturday trips; some stops are request-only, and riders 62 and over pay a reduced fare (607-432-7100). If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

How we work from Cooperstown

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Cooperstown residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Cooperstown plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including Bassett Medical Center, the Bassett Clinic, and any specialists outside the Bassett network.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Cooperstown include Bassett Medical Center?

Bassett Medical Center and the Bassett Clinic on the same campus are part of the Bassett Healthcare Network. Bassett's participating-insurance page says its practitioners take part in all products for most of the health plans in the region, but that some plans offer specific products that don't include Bassett practitioners, and it asks patients to check benefits with the plan. Carriers are not plans, so before you enroll I check the hospital and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's own directory.

Part of the village is in the Town of Middlefield. Does that change my plan list?

No. New York's county profile lists the Village of Cooperstown as shared with the Town of Middlefield, and both are in Otsego County. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county, so every Cooperstown address sees the Otsego County plan list.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Cooperstown?

The Otsego County Office for the Aging arranges non-emergency rides to and from pre-scheduled medical appointments, and rides to pick up prescriptions; call 607-547-4232 to see if a ride is available. There is no charge, contributions are suggested, and no one is turned away for not paying. Oneonta Public Transit's Cooperstown route runs between Oneonta and the village with stops at Fox Care and Bassett (607-432-7100), and on the Bassett campus a patient shuttle runs between the parking lots and the buildings on weekdays. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Cooperstown residents?

The Otsego County Office for the Aging, at the Meadows Office Complex, 140 County Highway 33W, Suite 5, in Cooperstown, (607) 547-4232, offers HIICAP, New York's free Medicare counselling; the county says there is no charge for the service. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. It's a good second opinion on anything I recommend.

Do you meet Cooperstown clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Cooperstown residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The comparison and the enrollment work the same way, and I stay your contact afterwards.
