Medicare in Schenectady County
Schenectady County is compact — one main hospital system, one home-grown carrier, and a large population of GE and state retirees. That makes some choices simpler here than elsewhere in the region, and one or two of them more consequential.
Where Schenectady County residents get care
- Ellis Medicine — Ellis Hospital and its primary and specialty practices across the city, Niskayuna, Rotterdam and Glenville. For most residents this is the network question that matters.
- Albany systems — Albany Med and St. Peter's are fifteen minutes away and many Niskayuna residents use them, especially for specialists. If you do, the plan has to include both.
- Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital — for post-acute care; worth checking on any Advantage plan if a joint replacement or stroke recovery is a realistic prospect.
What's particular about this county
- MVP is local. MVP Health Care's headquarters is downtown. Its plans are well represented here and its provider contracts are strong; I compare them alongside the national carriers on equal terms.
- GE and state retirees. A large share of the county's Medicare population retired from GE, the state, or the schools, with retiree coverage that either coordinates with Original Medicare or funds an individual plan. Getting this wrong — by enrolling in a "free" Advantage plan that cancels retiree coverage — is the most expensive mistake I see in Schenectady.
- Income and help. Parts of the city have many residents who qualify for New York's Medicare Savings Program, Extra Help and EPIC and have never applied. MSP alone is worth over $2,000 a year, and New York has no asset test.
- Dual-eligible plans. For people with both Medicare and Medicaid, several Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans operate here; benefits and eligibility rules vary by plan. I'll tell you which ones I can offer and what you'd qualify for.

The county's aging office, at 797 Broadway in Schenectady since April 2026, runs HIICAP counselling together with Catholic Charities Senior & Caregiver Support Services, and can screen you for the Medicare Savings Program, EPIC and Medicaid. Do Medicare Advantage plans in Schenectady County include Ellis?
Most of the plans sold here include Ellis Medicine, because a Schenectady plan without Ellis would be hard to sell — but 'most' isn't 'all', and specialist groups can be in or out separately from the hospital. I confirm each of your doctors against the current directory.
I'm a GE retiree. How does my retiree coverage work with Medicare?
GE has moved retirees through several arrangements over the years, including reimbursement accounts used to buy individual Medicare coverage. What you have depends on when you retired.
