Medicare agent for Dutchess County

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Dutchess County residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. Most Medicare choices here start with one question: which of the county's hospitals, Northwell or WMCHealth, does the plan list, and does it list your doctors?

Where Dutchess County residents get care

  • Vassar Brothers Medical Center, at 45 Reade Place in Poughkeepsie ((845) 454-8500), now part of Northwell Health.
  • Northern Dutchess Hospital, at 6511 Springbrook Avenue in Rhinebeck ((845) 876-3001), also now part of Northwell Health.
  • MidHudson Regional Hospital, at 241 North Road in Poughkeepsie (845-483-5000), part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).

Two health systems in one county means a plan can include one Poughkeepsie hospital and not the other. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here. Before we look at a single premium, I run every doctor and hospital you use against each plan's current directory for Dutchess County.

What's particular about Dutchess County

  • Its own plan list. Medicare Advantage plans are filed by county, so a Rhinebeck address and a Kingston address across the river in Ulster County can see different plan lists even when both use the same doctors.
  • Part-year residents. If you spend part of the year somewhere else, check how a plan handles routine care away from home. An HMO generally covers care outside its network only for emergencies, urgent care away from home and temporary out-of-area dialysis; a PPO may cover out-of-network providers, usually at a higher cost. Original Medicare with Medigap works with any provider in the country that accepts Medicare.
  • Retiree coverage. If you retired from New York State, a school district or another employer with retiree health coverage, how it coordinates with Medicare comes first; NYSHIP retirees have their own rules.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.

Medicare Advantage plans in Dutchess County

Advantage plans are filed and priced by county, so the list for Dutchess County is its own list. The carriers whose plans I'm authorized to offer here are the 11 on the carriers page, each with what it sells and which of the region's hospitals list it; which of their plans are sold in Dutchess County changes each January. What decides the choice in this county is whether the plan lists Northwell's Vassar Brothers and Northern Dutchess or WMCHealth's MidHudson Regional, whichever you use, and each of your doctors — the plan's provider directory, not the carrier name, is the final check.

How a plan review works

  1. A short call by phone or WhatsApp: your ZIP code, your doctors, your prescriptions, any retiree or VA coverage.
  2. A written comparison of the two or three plans I'd genuinely consider for you, with total yearly cost, not just premium, gone through together by video or phone.
  3. If you enroll through me, I submit it and remain your contact. No fee for any of it.

If you're turning 65, start about six months out. If you're already on a plan, check it during the Annual Enrollment Period each fall. Next door: Ulster County and Columbia County. Request a review.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Dutchess County include Vassar Brothers and MidHudson Regional?

It depends on the plan, and the two are in different health systems. Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie and Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck are now part of Northwell Health; MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie is part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). A plan can list one system and not the other, so I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Dutchess County.
