Medicare agent for Beacon

Beacon is a city in Dutchess County, with Newburgh, in Orange County, directly across the Hudson. Dutchess County decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, whichever side of the river your doctors are on. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Beacon residents by phone, WhatsApp and video.

Where Beacon residents get care

Vassar Brothers and MidHudson Regional are in Poughkeepsie, each on a county bus route, and St. Luke's Cornwall has a campus across the river in Newburgh. Three health systems are involved, and each contracts with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:

  • Vassar Brothers Medical Center, at 45 Reade Place in Poughkeepsie (845-454-8500), now part of Northwell Health.
  • MidHudson Regional Hospital, at 241 North Road in Poughkeepsie (845-483-5000), part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).
  • Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, with campuses in Newburgh and Cornwall in Orange County, which partnered with the Montefiore Health System in January 2016.

A plan can include one of these and not the others. With an HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and any rehab after a stay all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here; I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Beacon

  • A river between you and some of your doctors. Beacon sits on the east bank of the Hudson, with the Town of Fishkill around it on three sides and the City of Newburgh directly across the river. Beacon sees the Dutchess County plan list: 42 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Newburgh is in Orange County, which has its own list, so a doctor or hospital there has to be in the directory of the Dutchess County plan you pick. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Getting to appointments. Dutchess County Public Transit runs a route from Poughkeepsie to Beacon via the Poughkeepsie Galleria, Wappingers Falls, Route 9D and the Castle Point VA Center, and another from Beacon to Hopewell Junction. Its ADA paratransit serves eligible riders whose trips start and end within three-quarters of a mile of a county bus route, booked up to seven days ahead (845-473-8424). The Office for the Aging (845-486-2555) registers older adults who are not on Medicaid for a limited number of free rides to non-emergency medical appointments in the county. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree, employer and VA coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, people still working at 65 and veterans with VA care have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees, Medicare while working past 65 and Medicare and VA benefits cover the common cases.

How we work from Beacon

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Beacon residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Beacon plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the hospital they admit to: Vassar Brothers (Northwell), MidHudson Regional (WMCHealth) or St. Luke's Cornwall (Montefiore).
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Beacon include Vassar Brothers and MidHudson Regional?

It depends on the plan, and the two Poughkeepsie hospitals are in different health systems. Vassar Brothers Medical Center on Reade Place is now part of Northwell Health; MidHudson Regional Hospital on North Road is part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). A plan can list one system and not the other, so I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Dutchess County.

My doctors are across the river in Newburgh. Which plan list do I get?

Dutchess County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. Beacon is in Dutchess County; the City of Newburgh, directly across the Hudson, is in Orange County, where Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital has its Newburgh and Cornwall campuses. What matters for your Newburgh doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Dutchess County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Beacon?

Dutchess County Public Transit runs a route from Poughkeepsie to Beacon via the Poughkeepsie Galleria, Wappingers Falls, Route 9D and the Castle Point VA Center. Its ADA paratransit serves eligible riders whose trips start and end within three-quarters of a mile of a county bus route, booked up to seven days ahead at 845-473-8424. The Office for the Aging (845-486-2555) registers older adults who are not on Medicaid for a limited number of free rides to non-emergency medical appointments within the county. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Beacon residents?

The Dutchess County Office for the Aging, at 114 Delafield Street in Poughkeepsie, runs HIICAP, which gives free, objective counselling on Medicare. Its HIICAP hotline is 845-486-2566; the main office line is (845) 486-2555. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. It's a good second opinion on anything I recommend.

Do you meet Beacon clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Beacon residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The comparison and the enrollment work the same way, and I stay your contact afterwards.
