Medicare agent for Rhinebeck

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Rhinebeck residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The Village of Rhinebeck sits inside the Town of Rhinebeck in Dutchess County, with Northern Dutchess Hospital in town and Kingston, in Ulster County, across the Hudson. Dutchess County decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, in the village, the town and Rhinecliff alike.

Where Rhinebeck residents get care

Rhinebeck has its own hospital, and the larger hospitals in Poughkeepsie and Kingston belong to two different health systems, each contracting with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:

  • Northern Dutchess Hospital, at 6511 Springbrook Avenue (845-876-3001), an 84-bed nonprofit hospital now part of Northwell Health. Its emergency department is open around the clock (845-871-3440), and its Paul Rosenthal Rehabilitation Center runs the acute inpatient rehabilitation program, for stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, orthopedic trauma and similar conditions. On the same campus, Northwell Health Primary Care at Rhinebeck is in Suite 1001 (845-876-4432; weekdays 8 to 5), and Northwell Labs at Rhinebeck takes blood draws weekdays 7 to 4:30 (845-790-8855).
  • Vassar Brothers Medical Center, at 45 Reade Place in Poughkeepsie (845-454-8500), also part of Northwell Health.
  • MidHudson Regional Hospital, at 241 North Road in Poughkeepsie (845-483-5000), and HealthAlliance Hospital, at 105 Mary's Avenue in Kingston (845-338-2500), both part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).

A plan can include one of these systems and not the other. With an HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and any inpatient rehab after a stay all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here; I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Rhinebeck

  • Village, town and Rhinecliff, one plan list. The Village of Rhinebeck lies entirely within the Town, and the hamlet of Rhinecliff is in the Town too, so all three see the Dutchess County plan list: 42 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge takes you to Kingston, in Ulster County, which has its own list (34 plans), so a doctor or hospital there has to be in the directory of the Dutchess County plan you pick. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. Dutchess County Public Transit's Route C runs Monday to Saturday from Poughkeepsie to Tivoli via MidHudson Regional Hospital, Hyde Park, Rhinebeck and Red Hook. Its Flex service is curb-to-curb, on weekdays, anywhere in the county, for registered riders who book 30 days to 3 days ahead (845-473-8424). The Office for the Aging (845-486-2555) registers older adults who are not on Medicaid and have no other way to get there for a limited number of free rides to non-emergency medical appointments in the county. The Town's free senior van goes to the grocery store, the Starr Library and Village shops, mostly on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but not to medical appointments. If you rely on rides like these, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere they reach.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree, employer and VA coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, people still working at 65 and veterans with VA care have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees, Medicare while working past 65 and Medicare and VA benefits explain each one.

The Town senior van and the Dutchess County Office for the Aging

The Town of Rhinebeck's Over 60 and Thriving committee runs a free senior van for Rhinebeck residents who can step into it unassisted; register and reserve a seat through the Town Clerk at 845-876-3409. The county lists no Friendship Center in Rhinebeck. One of its centers is in Red Hook, which Route C also serves: the Red Hook Friendship Center at the Red Hook Community Center, 59 Fisk Street (845-475-1129), open weekdays 10 to 2, with a meal, activities and Medicare presentations. The Dutchess County Office for the Aging is at 114 Delafield Street in Poughkeepsie, (845) 486-2555. It runs HIICAP, free, objective Medicare counselling, on a hotline at 845-486-2566, and its pages cover EPIC and the Medicare Savings Programs. The HIICAP page has every county office. Statewide HIICAP line: 1-800-701-0501.

How we work from Rhinebeck

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Rhinebeck residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Rhinebeck plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the hospital they admit to: Northern Dutchess or Vassar Brothers (Northwell), or MidHudson Regional or HealthAlliance (WMCHealth).
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, gone through together by video or phone, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Rhinebeck include Northern Dutchess Hospital?

It depends on the plan. Northern Dutchess Hospital, at 6511 Springbrook Avenue in Rhinebeck, is now part of Northwell Health, as is Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie and HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston are part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). A plan can list one system and not the other, so I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Dutchess County.

My doctors are across the bridge in Kingston. Which plan list do I get?

Dutchess County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. The Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge connects Rhinecliff, in the Town of Rhinebeck, with Kingston in Ulster County, which has its own plan list. What matters for your Kingston doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Dutchess County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Rhinebeck?

Dutchess County Public Transit's Route C runs Monday to Saturday from Poughkeepsie to Tivoli via MidHudson Regional Hospital, Hyde Park, Rhinebeck and Red Hook. Its Flex service is curb-to-curb on weekdays in every municipality in the county for registered riders, booked 30 days to 3 days ahead at (845) 473-8424. The Office for the Aging (845-486-2555) registers older adults who are not on Medicaid and have no other transportation for a limited number of free rides to non-emergency medical appointments in the county. The Town's senior van is for shopping and the library, not medical trips. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Rhinebeck residents?

The Dutchess County Office for the Aging, at 114 Delafield Street in Poughkeepsie, runs HIICAP, which gives free, objective counselling on Medicare. Its HIICAP hotline is 845-486-2566; the main office line is (845) 486-2555. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. It's a good second opinion on anything I recommend.

Do you meet Rhinebeck clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Rhinebeck residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The comparison and the enrollment work the same way, and I stay your contact afterwards.
