Medicare agent for Poughkeepsie

The City of Poughkeepsie and the Town of Poughkeepsie are separate municipalities, both in Dutchess County, and that decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from. Its two hospitals belong to different health systems, Northwell and WMCHealth. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Poughkeepsie residents by phone, WhatsApp and video.

Where Poughkeepsie residents get care

Poughkeepsie's two hospitals belong to two health systems that contract with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:

  • Vassar Brothers Medical Center, at 45 Reade Place (845-454-8500), now part of Northwell Health.
  • MidHudson Regional Hospital, at 241 North Road (845-483-5000), with an emergency department, part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).

A plan can include one Poughkeepsie hospital and not the other. With an HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and any rehab after a stay all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Neither hospital has a page of its own here; I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Poughkeepsie

  • City or town, the same list. The City of Poughkeepsie and the Town of Poughkeepsie are separate municipalities, both in Dutchess County, so both see the Dutchess County plan list: 42 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Plans are filed by county, so an address across a county line can see a different list even when the doctors are the same.
  • Getting to appointments. Dutchess County Public Transit's Dial-A-Ride serves residents of the City and the Town of Poughkeepsie, among others, weekdays 8:15 to 4:15, once you have pre-registered (845-473-8424); its ADA paratransit serves eligible riders within three-quarters of a mile of a regular route, booked up to seven days ahead. On fixed routes, Route C runs via MidHudson Regional Hospital and Route K via Vassar Hospital. The Office for the Aging (845-486-2555) also registers older adults for a limited number of free rides to non-emergency medical appointments in the county. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

What a Poughkeepsie plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the hospital they admit to: Vassar Brothers (Northwell) or MidHudson Regional (WMCHealth).
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Poughkeepsie include Vassar Brothers and MidHudson Regional?

It depends on the plan, and the two hospitals are in different health systems. Vassar Brothers Medical Center on Reade Place is now part of Northwell Health; MidHudson Regional Hospital on North Road is part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). A plan can list one system and not the other, so I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Dutchess County.

I live in the Town of Poughkeepsie, not the city. Is my plan list different?

No. The City and the Town of Poughkeepsie are separate municipalities, but both are in Dutchess County, and Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county. Either address sees the Dutchess County plan list.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Poughkeepsie?

Dutchess County Public Transit's Dial-A-Ride is open to residents of the City and the Town of Poughkeepsie, among others, weekdays 8:15 to 4:15, after you pre-register (845-473-8424). Its ADA paratransit serves eligible riders within three-quarters of a mile of a regular bus route. The Office for the Aging (845-486-2555) registers older adults for a limited number of free rides to non-emergency medical appointments within the county. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Poughkeepsie residents?

The Dutchess County Office for the Aging, at 114 Delafield Street in Poughkeepsie, runs HIICAP, which gives free, objective counselling on Medicare. Its HIICAP hotline is 845-486-2566; the main office line is (845) 486-2555. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. It's a good second opinion on anything I recommend.

Do you meet Poughkeepsie clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Poughkeepsie residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The comparison and the enrollment work the same way, and I stay your contact afterwards.
