Medicare agent in the City of Rensselaer

The City of Rensselaer sits on the east bank of the Hudson, across the water from Albany, with the Albany-Rensselaer train station in the middle of downtown. Its hospitals are across the river in Albany or up the road in Troy, but its Medicare plan list is Rensselaer County's, so the first thing a plan has to fit is which side of the river your doctors are on.

Where Rensselaer residents get care

The City of Rensselaer has no hospital. The hospitals nearby belong to two health systems that contract with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:

  • St. Peter's Health Partners — St. Peter's Hospital, 315 South Manning Boulevard in Albany (518-525-1550), and Samaritan Hospital, 2215 Burdett Avenue in Troy (518-271-3300), which follow the same carrier list. In the city itself, the system's Rensselaer Health Center is at 53 Columbia Street (518-434-2526).
  • Albany Med Health System — Albany Medical Center, 43 New Scotland Avenue in Albany (518-262-3125), the region's academic medical center, with its own carrier list.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists and the hospital they admit to all have to be in the plan's directory for the year; a doctor on Columbia Street and a specialist on New Scotland Avenue can belong to different systems. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Every plan sold in Rensselaer County is placed against Samaritan's list on its own page, with St. Peter's and Albany Medical Center alongside, and one page has the carriers each hospital lists side by side; I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about the City of Rensselaer

  • Albany doctors, Rensselaer County plans. The city was formed in 1897 from the villages of Greenbush, East Albany and Bath, and it is in Rensselaer County, so every address in it sees the Rensselaer County list: 57 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Albany, across the river, is in Albany County, with 57 plans of its own. Neighbors using the same Albany doctor can be choosing from different lists, and a move across the river can change which plans you can keep: a move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. The county's Department for the Aging runs a medical transportation service for seniors who live in Rensselaer County, weekdays except holidays, from home to medical appointments in the county or a neighboring county (reservations 518-270-2734, 8:00 to 3:30). On regular buses, CDTA's Route 214 runs seven days a week from the Empire State Plaza through the rail station stop at East and Herrick Streets and along 3rd Street to East Greenbush, and Route 114 runs from the same stop into downtown Albany and out Madison and Western Avenues. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Rensselaer (12144). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 go through those two cases.

Meeting in Rensselaer

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I meet Rensselaer clients there, at home, or by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Rensselaer plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including which hospital they admit to: St. Peter's, Samaritan or Albany Medical Center.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in the City of Rensselaer but all my doctors are in Albany. Do I get Albany County's plans?

No. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by the county you live in, not the county your doctors are in. The City of Rensselaer is in Rensselaer County, so you choose from the Rensselaer County list. What matters is whether a plan on that list has your Albany doctors, and the hospital they admit to, in its directory for the year. I check each one by name.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Rensselaer use?

The city has no hospital of its own. Depending on your doctors you'll be admitted to St. Peter's Hospital in Albany or Samaritan Hospital in Troy, which both belong to St. Peter's Health Partners and follow one carrier list, or to Albany Medical Center, which publishes its own. St. Peter's Health Partners also runs the Rensselaer Health Center on Columbia Street. A plan can include one system and not the other, so I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments?

Rensselaer County's Department for the Aging runs a medical transportation service for seniors who live in the county: weekdays except holidays, from home to medical appointments in the county or a neighboring county, booked at 518-270-2734 between 8:00 and 3:30. You need to get in and out of the van on your own, with a cane or walker if you use one, or bring an escort. On regular buses, CDTA Route 214 runs seven days a week from the Empire State Plaza through the rail station stop on East Street and 3rd Street to East Greenbush, and Route 114 runs from the rail station stop into downtown Albany and out Madison and Western Avenues.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Rensselaer residents?

The Rensselaer County Department for the Aging, part of Unified Family Services at 99 Troy Road, Suite 306, in East Greenbush (518-270-2730), runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program, and has material on EPIC, Extra Help and the Medicare Savings Program. It covers every plan and sells nothing. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Rensselaer clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I also come to you at home in Rensselaer. A first conversation can be by phone or WhatsApp, and a full review works by video when that's easier. No fee for Medicare plan help.
