Medicare agent for Schodack and Castleton

Schodack is a Rensselaer County town on the east bank of the Hudson, with Castleton-on-Hudson as its only village and hamlets from Schodack Landing to East Schodack. The hospitals its residents use are in Troy, Albany and Hudson, in two health systems, so the first thing a Medicare plan has to fit is which of them your doctors use.

Where Schodack residents get care

The hospitals Schodack and Castleton-on-Hudson residents are admitted to are in Troy, Albany and Hudson, and belong to two health systems:

  • St. Peter's Health Partners — Samaritan Hospital at 2215 Burdett Avenue in Troy (518-271-3300) and St. Peter's Hospital at 315 South Manning Boulevard in Albany (518-525-1550). The two follow the same accepted-carrier list.
  • Albany Med Health System — Albany Medical Center at 43 New Scotland Avenue in Albany (518-262-3125), and, down the river, Columbia Memorial at 71 Prospect Avenue in Hudson (518-828-7601), which has care centers across Columbia and Greene counties. Both are on the Albany Med Health System's accepted-insurance list, but being in the same system does not mean the same plan contracts for every practice.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists and the hospital they admit to all have to be in the plan's directory for the year; Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Every plan sold in Rensselaer County is placed against Samaritan's list on its own page, with St. Peter's and Albany Medical Center alongside, and the carriers each Capital Region hospital lists are on one page. Columbia Memorial has no page of its own here; I check it, and each of your doctors, by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Schodack

  • One village, many hamlets, one plan list. Castleton-on-Hudson is the town's only village; the rest of Schodack is hamlets such as East Schodack, Schodack Center and Schodack Landing, and the town's own offices on Schuurman Road use a Castleton mailing address. Plans follow the county, so every address in the town sees the Rensselaer County list: 57 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027.
  • Doctors across the river, plans from this side. Albany Medical Center and St. Peter's are in Albany County, which has its own list (57 plans for 2027), and Columbia Memorial is in Hudson. You still choose from Rensselaer County's plans; what matters is whether a plan on that list includes the doctors you drive to. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Network reach matters more than extras. When the doctors you use are spread between Troy, Albany and Hudson, a narrow HMO network can leave one of them out. That is a reason to look at PPO plans and at Original Medicare with Medigap alongside HMOs, before comparing anything else.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Castleton addresses (12033). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Meeting in Schodack

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I meet Schodack and Castleton-on-Hudson clients there, at home, or by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Schodack plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including which hospital they admit to: Samaritan, St. Peter's, Albany Medical Center or Columbia Memorial.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Schodack use?

Depending on your doctors you'll be admitted to Samaritan in Troy or St. Peter's in Albany (both St. Peter's Health Partners), to Albany Medical Center, or to Columbia Memorial in Hudson, which is part of the Albany Med Health System. St. Peter's and Samaritan share one accepted-carrier list; Albany Medical Center and Columbia Memorial are both on the Albany Med Health System's list. Those lists name carriers, not plans, so I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

My doctor is in Albany or Hudson. Can I still get those counties' plans?

No. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by the county you live in, not the county your doctors are in. A Schodack or Castleton-on-Hudson address sees the Rensselaer County plan list, and the question is whether a plan on that list includes your Albany or Hudson doctors in its directory for the year.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Schodack residents?

The Rensselaer County Department for the Aging, part of Unified Family Services at 99 Troy Road, Suite 306, in East Greenbush (518-270-2730), runs HIICAP. Its counselors cover Medicare Advantage, Medigap, the Medicare Savings Program, EPIC and employer or retiree coverage, and don't endorse any insurer. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Is there a senior center in Schodack?

Yes. Rensselaer County runs the Schodack Senior Center at 1800 East Schodack Road in Castleton (518-477-6581), serving Castleton, Nassau, Sand Lake and Schodack, with a lunch program by reservation. It is a county meal site, not a Medicare office; for Medicare questions the county's Department for the Aging in East Greenbush is the place to call.

Do you meet Schodack clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I come to you at home in Schodack or Castleton-on-Hudson when that's easier. A first conversation can be by phone or WhatsApp, and full reviews work well by video. No fee for Medicare plan help.
