Medicare agent for Schaghticoke

The Town of Schaghticoke, in Rensselaer County, takes in Hemstreet Park on the Hudson, facing Mechanicville, the Village of Schaghticoke near the east town line, and the hamlets of Melrose, Pleasantdale and Speigletown. The town has no political center and its mail goes through several post offices, so a Medicare plan has to fit the county you live in and the hospitals in Troy and Albany your doctors use.

Where Schaghticoke residents get care

Schaghticoke has no hospital. The town's own history describes Hemstreet Park, Pleasantdale, Speigletown and part of Melrose as suburbs whose residents commute to Troy or Albany, and the hospitals there belong to two health systems:

  • St. Peter's Health Partners — Samaritan Hospital at 2215 Burdett Avenue in Troy (518-271-3300) and St. Peter's Hospital at 315 South Manning Boulevard in Albany (518-525-1550). The two follow the same accepted-carrier list.
  • Albany Med Health System — Albany Medical Center at 43 New Scotland Avenue in Albany (518-262-3125), which contracts with carriers separately from St. Peter's.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists and the hospital they admit to all have to be in the plan's directory for the year; Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Every plan sold in Rensselaer County is placed against Samaritan's list on its own page, with St. Peter's and Albany Medical Center alongside, and the carriers each Capital Region hospital lists are on one page. Those lists name carriers, not plans, so I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Schaghticoke

  • Several post offices, one county. Town Hall is at 290 Northline Drive in Melrose (12121). The town's own fire department listings use Troy addresses for Speigletown (12182) and Pleasantdale (12180), a Mechanicville address for Hemstreet Park (12118), and Schaghticoke (12154) and Johnsonville (12094) for the rest. Every address in the town is in Rensselaer County, which has 57 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027.
  • ZIP codes that cross county lines. The Census Bureau puts most of the Mechanicville 12118 ZIP area in Saratoga County (52 plans for 2027), and parts of the Schaghticoke 12154 and Johnsonville 12094 ZIP areas in Washington County (44 plans). Plans follow the county of your street address, not the name on the envelope, so I confirm the county first. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Two senior centers, both outside town. The county's Hoosick Falls Senior Center lists Schaghticoke among the places it serves, and the Troy Senior Center lists Pleasantdale. Both run meal programs booked by phone. They are also places to ask about county programs before or after a plan review.
  • County rides to appointments. The Rensselaer County Department for the Aging runs medical transportation for seniors who live in the county, Monday to Friday, booked at 518-270-2734 between 8 and 3:30, to appointments in the county or a neighbouring county, with one wheelchair van. Riders must get in and out of the van on their own, and anyone who needs help into the building brings an escort. If that's how you get to the doctor, a plan's in-network doctors have to be somewhere the van goes.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in every ZIP code above: 12094, 12118, 12121, 12154, 12180 and 12182. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Meeting in Schaghticoke

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I meet Schaghticoke clients there, at home anywhere in the town or the village, or by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your street address and ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Schaghticoke plan review covers

  1. The county of your street address, confirmed first, since a Mechanicville, Schaghticoke or Johnsonville ZIP code can reach into another county.
  2. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including which hospital they admit to: Samaritan, St. Peter's or Albany Medical Center.
  3. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  4. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help, and a written comparison with total yearly cost.

No fee for Medicare plan help. Request a review, or read the wider Medicare page for all of Rensselaer County. Nearby: Troy, Brunswick, Hoosick Falls and, across the Hudson in Saratoga County, Mechanicville and Stillwater.

Questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

My mail says Mechanicville or Troy, but I live in the Town of Schaghticoke. Which plans can I get?

Rensselaer County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county, not by post office name, and the whole Town of Schaghticoke is in Rensselaer County. The town's own listings use Troy addresses for the Speigletown and Pleasantdale fire departments and a Mechanicville address for Hemstreet Park's. The Census Bureau puts most of the Mechanicville 12118 ZIP area in Saratoga County, and part of the Schaghticoke 12154 ZIP area in Washington County, so a neighbour with the same post office name can be choosing from another county's list. I check the county of your street address before anything else.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Schaghticoke use?

There isn't one in town. Depending on your doctors you'll be admitted to Samaritan in Troy or St. Peter's in Albany, both St. Peter's Health Partners, or to Albany Medical Center. St. Peter's and Samaritan share one accepted-carrier list and Albany Medical Center has its own. Those lists name carriers, not plans, so I check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory for the year.

Is there a senior center for Schaghticoke residents?

Rensselaer County's Hoosick Falls Senior Center, at 2199 Route 22 in Hoosick Falls (518-686-7561), lists Hoosick Falls, Pittstown and Schaghticoke as the places it serves, and meals there are reserved or cancelled at the same number. The county's Troy Senior Center, at 1520 Sixth Avenue in Troy, lists Pleasantdale among the places it serves; its meal line is 518-270-2740.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Schaghticoke residents?

The Rensselaer County Department for the Aging, part of Unified Family Services at 99 Troy Road, Suite 306, in East Greenbush (518-270-2730), runs HIICAP. Its counselors cover Medicare, Medicaid, the Medicare Savings Program, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, EPIC and employer or retiree coverage, and the county says nothing they provide is an endorsement of any insurer. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Schaghticoke clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I come to you at home anywhere in the Town of Schaghticoke, the Village of Schaghticoke included. We can also talk by phone, WhatsApp or video. No fee for Medicare plan help.
