Business insurance in Canajoharie
Canajoharie's businesses sit where Canajoharie Creek meets the Mohawk: a historic downtown with the Erie Canal trail running through it, the former Beech-Nut site being redeveloped, and farms across the town off Thruway Exit 29. Here's what a business here needs, and the local rules and risks that change it.
A Canajoharie small business needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. Most of the village is a historic district, and owners renovating with NY Forward small project funds are working on older buildings that need replacement cost and ordinance-or-law cover. Canajoharie Creek saw record flooding in Hurricane Irene, and commercial property policies exclude flood. Food vendors and peddlers need a Village permit. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Canajoharie businesses by phone, email and video.
What's different about insuring a business in Canajoharie
- A historic downtown. The State describes most of the village as a historic district, and the County's hazard plan says it was listed on the National Register as the Canajoharie Historic District in 2015. Older buildings need commercial property written at replacement cost with ordinance-or-law cover; shops and offices fit a business owners policy, and apartments upstairs need landlord cover on the same building.
- NY Forward renovations. The State's NY Forward projects for Canajoharie include a mixed-use building on the former Beech-Nut factory site, with homes above ground-floor commercial space, and a Small Project Fund for facades and commercial and residential rehabilitation. Tell your carrier before work starts, and ask contractors for their certificates; see contractor insurance, with Scaffold Law exposure on every roof and facade.
- Canajoharie Creek and the Mohawk. The village sits where the creek meets the river. The County's plan records record creek flooding in Hurricane Irene, a 2014 flash flood that closed the Thruway between Exits 29 and 29A, and 184 structures in the 100-year floodplain across the town and its villages; the Village has its own flood damage prevention law. Commercial property excludes flood; flood insurance is a separate policy, and sewer backup a separate endorsement.
- The Erie Canal trail. The State notes that the Erie Canal trail, part of the Empire State Trail, runs through the downtown business district. Restaurants and bars need liquor liability under the Dram Shop Act alongside general liability; see restaurant insurance and retail shops.
- Vendors and food trucks. The Village issues Mobile Food Vendor or Peddler permits by the day, week, month or year from its office on Erie Boulevard, asking for your vehicle details, driver's license, assumed-name certificate and sales tax certificate. See food truck insurance.
- Farms around the village. The County's plan names agriculture as the town's main land use, and Beech-Nut, founded here in 1891, as the town's largest employer for over a century. Farms selling to the public add product liability, and farm vehicles on the road need the right auto cover.

Common questions
Short answers to what people ask before they call.
Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.
My building is near Canajoharie Creek or the river. Am I covered if it floods?
Not by a standard commercial property policy; flood is excluded. The County's hazard plan records record flooding on Canajoharie Creek in Hurricane Irene in 2011, a 2014 flash flood along the creek that closed the Thruway between Exits 29 and 29A, and the Village evacuating its own municipal building during Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. It counts 184 structures in the 100-year floodplain and 75 more in the 500-year floodplain across the town and its villages. Flood is a separate policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private carrier, for the building and the contents. Send me the address and I'll look it up on FEMA's map.
I'm renovating a downtown building with NY Forward money. Where does insurance come in?
The State's NY Forward award for Canajoharie includes a Small Project Fund for facade renovations and commercial and residential rehabilitation in the NY Forward area. Most of the village is a historic district, so tell your carrier before work starts, insure the building at what it would cost to rebuild, and add ordinance-or-law cover for the code upgrades a rebuild can trigger. Ask each contractor for liability and workers' comp certificates before they start. Send me the grant paperwork and I'll check your policy against it.
I want to sell from a food truck or as a peddler in the village. What does Canajoharie ask for?
A Mobile Food Vendor or Peddler permit from the Village office at 75 Erie Boulevard. The application asks where you'll sell and what, your vehicle's make, model and plate, a copy of your driver's license, your assumed-name certificate number if you trade under one, and your New York sales tax certificate number. The form itself doesn't ask for an insurance certificate, but the truck still needs commercial auto, and what you sell needs general liability with product cover. The food truck page goes through both.
I need a special use permit from the Planning Board. Does the application touch insurance?
Indirectly. The Village's special use permit application, under §157-15 of the Village Code, asks you to list every designer and contractor on the project, from the architect or engineer to the general, electrical, plumbing and mechanical contractors, and to explain how the use won't increase the potential for flood damage to neighbouring property. Each contractor you list should carry its own liability and workers' comp, and the building should be insured for the work while it's under way. Once your policies are in force, I get you the certificates.
Do you meet Canajoharie owners in person?
No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Canajoharie businesses by phone, email and video. Once the policies are in force, I get you the certificates, and audits and claims come through me.
