Medicare agent for Keene and Keene Valley

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Keene residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The Town of Keene, with the hamlets of Keene, Keene Valley and St. Huberts, is in Essex County, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, wherever your doctors are.

Where Keene residents get care

Primary care in Keene and the hospital in Saranac Lake are run by Adirondack Health; the county's other hospital is in Elizabethtown, under a different health system:

  • Adirondack Health — the Keene Health Center at 2841 State Route 73 in Keene (518-576-9771; weekdays 8 to 4). Its hospital is Adirondack Medical Center, 2233 State Route 86 in Saranac Lake (518-891-4141), with 24-hour emergency care and inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services. The system also runs the Lake Placid Health Center, covered on the Lake Placid page.
  • University of Vermont Health – Elizabethtown Community Hospital — a critical access hospital at 75 Park Street in Elizabethtown (518-873-6377), with a second location in Ticonderoga, providing emergency, inpatient, rehabilitation and specialty care. The Elizabethtown page has more on it.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and any rehab after a hospital stay all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Neither Adirondack Health nor Elizabethtown Community Hospital has a page of its own on this site, so I check the health center, the hospital and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory for Essex County.

What's particular about Keene

  • Three hamlets, one plan list. The Town of Keene, formed in 1808 from parts of Elizabethtown and Jay, takes in the hamlets of Keene, Keene Valley and St. Huberts, and Mount Marcy, the state's highest peak. The Town is in Essex County, and so is all of the land in the 12942 and 12943 ZIP areas, so everyone here sees the Essex County plan list: 22 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Two health systems. Day-to-day care can be at the Keene Health Center while an emergency or an admission goes to Saranac Lake or Elizabethtown. A plan has to include the doctors and the hospital you'd actually use.
  • Getting to appointments. The Essex County Office for the Aging arranges medical rides for residents 60 and over with volunteer drivers; call as soon as the appointment is booked. The county bus page lists no current route through Keene, because the Mountain Valley Shoppers route that named Elizabethtown–Keene is closed until further notice. Medicaid members can book non-emergency medical rides through MAS (866-883-7865). If rides are hard to arrange, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere you can reach.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Keene (12942) and Keene Valley (12943). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, county, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover two common cases.
Local resources

The Town's resource guide and the Essex County Office for the Aging

Keene's Age-Friendly Task Force publishes a Town resource guide, updated in January 2026, covering health care, social services, supportive housing and senior programs; it is on the Town's Senior Resources page, and hard copies are at the Keene and Keene Valley libraries and Town Hall (518-576-4444). The Essex County Office for the Aging in Elizabethtown, (518) 873-3695, says its outreach staff give accurate and unbiased information on Medicare, Part D, EPIC and Medicaid and help with long-term care insurance questions, and some people qualify for Extra Help with drug plan costs. Homebound residents 60 and over can get home-delivered meals through the Nutrition Program for the Elderly, and NY Connects gives free, objective information on long-term services. HIICAP statewide line: 1-800-701-0501. The HIICAP page explains how it works.

How we work from Keene

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Keene residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call; the comparison comes to you in writing and we go through it together by video or phone.

What a Keene plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the Keene Health Center, Adirondack Medical Center and, if you use it, Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

No fee for Medicare plan help. Request a review, or read the wider Medicare page for all of Essex County. Also in Essex County: Lake Placid · Elizabethtown · Ticonderoga.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in Keene Valley. Which plan list do I get?

Essex County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. Keene Valley is a hamlet of the Town of Keene, which is in Essex County, and the Census Bureau puts all of the land in the 12942 (Keene) and 12943 (Keene Valley) ZIP areas in Essex County. If you see doctors in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid or farther afield, what matters is whether they are in the directory of the Essex County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Keene use?

It depends on the plan and your doctors. Adirondack Health runs the Keene Health Center at 2841 State Route 73 (518-576-9771) and Adirondack Medical Center at 2233 State Route 86 in Saranac Lake (518-891-4141), which provides 24-hour emergency care. University of Vermont Health – Elizabethtown Community Hospital, at 75 Park Street in Elizabethtown (518-873-6377), is a critical access hospital in a different health system. Neither system has a page of its own on this site, so before we compare anything else I check the health center, the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory for Essex County.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Keene?

The Essex County Office for the Aging arranges medical transportation for county residents 60 and over, with volunteer drivers; call (518) 873-3695 as soon as you can so there is time to find a driver. The county bus page lists no current route through Keene: the Mountain Valley Shoppers route, which named Elizabethtown–Keene, is closed until further notice. Medicaid members may qualify for free non-emergency medical rides, booked through MAS at 866-883-7865. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is Medicare counselling for Keene residents?

The Essex County Office for the Aging in Elizabethtown, (518) 873-3695, says its outreach staff give accurate and unbiased information on Medicare, Part D, EPIC, Medicaid and long-term care insurance. HIICAP, New York's Medicare counselling program, has a statewide line, 1-800-701-0501, that routes you to your county's program. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; the county office is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Keene clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Keene residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A review covers the same ground that way: your doctors, your prescriptions, any retiree or VA coverage, and the plans sold at your address.
