Medicare agent for Lake Placid

Lake Placid is a village inside the Town of North Elba, in Essex County, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from. Primary care is at Adirondack Health's Lake Placid Health Center on Old Military Road, and the hospital is Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Lake Placid residents by phone, WhatsApp and video.

Where Lake Placid residents get care

Primary care in Lake Placid and the nearest hospital are both run by Adirondack Health; the county's other hospital is in Elizabethtown, under a different health system:

  • Adirondack Health — the Lake Placid Health and Medical Fitness Center at 203 Old Military Road houses the Lake Placid Health Center (518-523-1717; weekdays 8 to 5), sports medicine and rehabilitation, and X-ray. Its hospital is Adirondack Medical Center, 2233 State Route 86 in Saranac Lake (518-891-4141), with 24-hour emergency care and inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services. The system also runs the Keene Health Center on State Route 73.
  • University of Vermont Health – Elizabethtown Community Hospital — a critical access hospital at 75 Park Street in Elizabethtown (518-873-6377), with a second campus in Ticonderoga.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and any rehab after a hospital stay all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Neither Adirondack Health nor Elizabethtown Community Hospital has a page of its own on this site, so I check the health center, the hospital and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory for Essex County.

What's particular about Lake Placid

  • A village inside a town. The Town of North Elba contains the whole Village of Lake Placid, and both are in Essex County, so everyone here sees the Essex County plan list: 22 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The list follows the county your home is in, not the hospital you use.
  • The hospital is in Saranac Lake. Day-to-day care can be on Old Military Road while an emergency or an admission goes to Adirondack Medical Center. A plan has to include both, and if you'd rather be treated in Elizabethtown, that hospital too.
  • Getting to appointments. The Essex County Office for the Aging arranges medical rides for residents 60 and over with volunteer drivers; ask as early as you can. Essex County Public Transportation runs Saranac Lake–Lake Placid and Lewis–Elizabethtown–Lake Placid routes on weekdays, and the free Placid XPRSS shuttle runs through the village seven days a week ((800) 914-9266). If the bus is how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those routes reach.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Lake Placid (12946). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

How we work from Lake Placid

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Lake Placid residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call; the comparison comes to you in writing and we go through it together by video or phone.

What a Lake Placid plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the Lake Placid Health Center, Adirondack Medical Center and, if you use it, Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in Lake Placid. Which plan list do I get?

Essex County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. The Town of North Elba contains the whole Village of Lake Placid, and both are on Essex County's list of its towns and villages. If you see doctors outside the county, what matters is whether they are in the directory of the Essex County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Which hospital do Medicare Advantage plans in Lake Placid use?

It depends on the plan. Adirondack Health runs the Lake Placid Health Center at 203 Old Military Road (518-523-1717) and Adirondack Medical Center at 2233 State Route 86 in Saranac Lake (518-891-4141), which provides 24-hour emergency care. The county's other hospital is University of Vermont Health – Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown. Neither system has a page of its own on this site, so before we compare anything else I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory for Essex County.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Lake Placid?

The Essex County Office for the Aging arranges medical transportation for county residents 60 and over, with volunteer drivers; ask as early as you can, on (518) 873-3695. Essex County Public Transportation runs Saranac Lake–Lake Placid and Lewis–Elizabethtown–Lake Placid routes on weekdays, not holidays, and says all its buses are accessible; call (800) 914-9266. The free Placid XPRSS shuttle runs through the village seven days a week. Medicaid members may qualify for free non-emergency medical rides, booked through MAS at 866-883-7865.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Lake Placid residents?

The Essex County Office for the Aging in Elizabethtown, (518) 873-3695, says its outreach staff give unbiased information on Medicare, Part D, EPIC, Medicaid and long-term care insurance. HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program, has a statewide line, 1-800-701-0501. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; the county office is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Lake Placid clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Lake Placid residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A review covers the same ground that way: your doctors, your prescriptions, any retiree or VA coverage, and the plans sold at your address.
