Medicare agent for Schroon Lake and the Town of Schroon

The Town of Schroon sits on Essex County's southern border, inside the Adirondack Park and centered on Schroon Lake, and Essex County decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from. Primary care in town is at Hudson Headwaters' Schroon Lake Health Center on Fairfield Avenue. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Schroon Lake residents by phone, WhatsApp and video.

Where Schroon Lake residents get care

  • Schroon Lake Health Center, 24 Fairfield Avenue (518-532-7120), run by Hudson Headwaters Health Network: family medicine, gynecology, lab services, podiatry, behavioral health, nutrition counselling and diabetes education, care management and clinical pharmacy services. It is open weekdays, with office hours from 8:30 to 4:30, and on Saturday mornings from July 4th through Labor Day; blood draws are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and Hudson Headwaters providers answer by phone after hours and on weekends.
  • University of Vermont Health – Elizabethtown Community Hospital, a critical access hospital at 75 Park Street in Elizabethtown (518-873-6377), with a second campus at 101 Adirondack Drive in Ticonderoga (518-585-3700) that has a 24-hour emergency department.
  • Glens Falls Hospital, part of the Albany Med Health System, whose physician practices list Essex County in the area they serve. The Glens Falls Hospital page sets out that hospital's own accepted-insurance list.
  • Emergencies. The Town's plan says its fire department is staffed by volunteers, and that Schroon Lake Emergency Medical Services is a nonprofit housed in the same location.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital and any rehab or nursing stay after it all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Neither Hudson Headwaters nor Elizabethtown Community Hospital has a page of its own on this site, so I check the health center, the hospital and each specialist by name in the plan's directory for Essex County before we compare anything else.

What's particular about Schroon Lake

  • Essex County's list. The Town of Schroon is in Essex County, so it sees the Essex County plan list: 22 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The Town's trails run south to the Warren County line, and neighbors over that line choose from Warren County's list.
  • An older population. The Town's 2025 comprehensive plan says 28.5 percent of residents are 65 or older, with a median age of nearly 58, and credits much of the town's recent growth to retirees settling there. If you moved here from another county, the plan you had there may not be sold here, so a move is a reason to check.
  • Second homes, both ways. The Town counts thousands of second homeowners and yearly visitors. Medicare Advantage follows your permanent address, so a second homeowner whose main home is elsewhere chooses from that county's list, and a Schroon Lake resident who spends winters away needs to know how the plan treats care far from home. An HMO covers out-of-network care only for emergencies, urgent care away from home and temporary out-of-area dialysis; Original Medicare with Medigap works with any provider in the country that accepts Medicare.
  • Getting to appointments. The Essex County Office for the Aging arranges medical rides for residents 60 and over with volunteer drivers; ask as early as you can, on (518) 873-3695. Medicaid members may qualify for free non-emergency medical rides, booked through MAS at 866-883-7865.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Schroon Lake (12870). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

What a Schroon Lake plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the Schroon Lake Health Center, Elizabethtown Community Hospital and its Ticonderoga campus, and any Glens Falls specialists.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Schroon Lake include the health center on Fairfield Avenue?

It depends on the plan. The Schroon Lake Health Center, at 24 Fairfield Avenue (518-532-7120), is run by Hudson Headwaters Health Network, and a plan's directory lists it, and each provider in it, on its own. Before you enroll, I check the health center and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Essex County. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works.

Which hospital does my plan need to include?

Whichever one you use. In Essex County, University of Vermont Health – Elizabethtown Community Hospital is a critical access hospital at 75 Park Street in Elizabethtown (518-873-6377), with a second campus at 101 Adirondack Drive in Ticonderoga (518-585-3700) that has a 24-hour emergency department. Glens Falls Hospital's physician practices list Essex County among the counties they serve. With a Medicare Advantage HMO, the hospital, your specialists and any rehab afterwards all have to be in the plan's network; I check each one by name before we compare anything else.

Is there a senior lunch in Schroon Lake?

Yes. Essex County's list of senior centers and nutrition sites includes Schroon Lake, at 1108 US Route 9, with lunch Monday through Friday at 11 and the site open from 8 to noon; call 518-532-0179. The sites are run by the Adirondack Community Action Program with Essex County Office for the Aging funding.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Schroon Lake residents?

The Essex County Office for the Aging in Elizabethtown, (518) 873-3695, says its outreach staff give unbiased information on Medicare, Part D, EPIC, Medicaid and long-term care insurance. HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program, has a statewide line, 1-800-701-0501, that connects you to the program for your county. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; the county office is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Schroon Lake clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Schroon Lake residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A review covers the same ground that way: your doctors, your prescriptions, any retiree or VA coverage, and the plans sold at your address.
