Business insurance in LaGrange
The Town of LaGrange runs its permits, licenses and inspections from Town Hall on Stringham Road in LaGrangeville. Here's what a LaGrange business needs, and the Town rules that change it. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with LaGrange businesses by phone, email and video.
A LaGrange small business needs workers' compensation from the first employee, DBL and Paid Family Leave once someone has worked 30 days in a calendar year, general liability for its landlord and clients, and commercial auto for work vehicles. The Town wants workers' comp proof for every building permit and says ACORD forms are not accepted as that proof. Peddlers and vendors need a Town license with a certificate of insurance or a liability bond, and special events need liability insurance naming the Town of LaGrange as additional insured. Wappinger Creek floods, and commercial property excludes flood. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with LaGrange businesses by phone, email and video.
What's different about insuring a business in LaGrange
- Contractors and Town building permits. The Town requires workers' compensation proof for every building permit and says ACORD forms are not accepted as that proof; it has to be the state form from your carrier, or an exemption where the Workers' Compensation Board allows one. See contractor insurance and workers' compensation; every roof and facade also carries Scaffold Law exposure.
- Opening in a plaza or tenant space. The Town's tenant-space application asks for the plaza name and unit, a Zoning Administrator's determination, an owner-signed fit-up permit, a certificate of use and a fit-up plan showing exits, extinguishers, smoke alarms and emergency lighting, plus any State license, such as a liquor license. Your lease sets the liability limits and additional insureds; see retail shop insurance, business owners policies and restaurant and bar insurance.
- Peddlers and vendors. A Chapter 176 license from the Town Clerk, on Town Board approval, needs a certificate of insurance or a public liability bond, a Sheriff's background check, County health approval for food and LICENSED VENDOR markings on the vehicle. See food truck and vendor insurance and commercial auto.
- Special events. The Town Clerk's special event license asks for liability insurance naming the Town of LaGrange as additional insured, proof of any license to serve alcohol, notice to the fire department, State Police and Sheriff, and health certificates for each vendor. Serving alcohol brings liquor liability under the Dram Shop Act; see general liability.
- Wappinger Creek. The Town says its Wappinger Creek trail closes when the creek is in full flood, typically for a week in early spring, and the creek bank needed two stabilization projects after severe erosion. The Town issues its own floodplain development and wetlands permits. Commercial property excludes flood; flood insurance is a separate policy.

Common questions
Short answers to what people ask before they call.
Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.
I'm a contractor pulling a building permit in LaGrange. What workers' comp proof does the Town want?
The Building, Zoning and Fire Prevention Department requires workers' compensation proof for all building permits, with the exceptions the Workers' Compensation Board allows, and says ACORD forms are not acceptable proof of workers' comp; the form has to come from your carrier. For work in a commercial tenant space, the Town's application names form U-26.3 or C-105.2. Homeowners doing their own work file an exemption affidavit. Once the policies are in force, I get you the certificates on the forms the Town asks for.
I'm leasing space in a LaGrange plaza. What does the Town ask for before I open?
The Town's application to occupy a commercial tenant space starts with a Statement of Use: the plaza name and unit, the size of the space, the number of employees and the hours. The Zoning Administrator decides whether the use is permitted and whether a site plan has to go to the Planning Board. Then come a building permit for the fit-up signed by the property owner, a certificate of use, a sign permit if you're adding a sign, and a fit-up plan showing exits, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and emergency lighting. A restaurant in a municipal water or sewer district may need its own connection. Those life-safety details are what a property carrier asks about too.
I want to sell from a truck, a tent or door to door in LaGrange. Do I need a license?
Yes. Peddling, soliciting and hawking are licensed under Chapter 176 of the Town Code; the Town Clerk issues the license once the Town Board approves the application. You attach a certificate of insurance or a public liability bond in at least the amount §176-9 sets, authorize a background check through the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, and, if you use scales, show County Sealer of Weights and Measures approval no more than six months old. Food vendors attach their Dutchess County Department of Health certificate, and a vehicle has to show the words LICENSED VENDOR with the license number on both sides. The truck itself needs commercial auto.
My business is near Wappinger Creek. If it floods, am I covered?
Not by a standard commercial property policy; flood is excluded. The Town's page for the Wappinger Creek Greenway Trail, in the northwest of the town, says the trail closes when the creek is in full flood, typically for a week in early spring, and that severe erosion of the creek bank led to two bank stabilization projects. The Town also has its own floodplain development permit. Flood is a separate policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private carrier, and business income pays only after damage from a covered cause, so ask how each quote treats flood.
Do you meet LaGrange owners in person?
No. I'm based in Clifton Park and meet people in person across six counties. LaGrange is outside them, so I work with LaGrange businesses by phone, email and video. Once the policies are in force, I get you the certificates, and audits and claims come through me.
