Medicare agent for Catskill

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Catskill residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The Village and Town of Catskill are in Greene County, across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge from Columbia Memorial's hospital in Hudson, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from.

Where Catskill residents get care

  • Columbia Memorial Health, part of the Albany Med Health System. In Catskill it runs Rapid Care at 10 Grandview Avenue (518-943-9100), open seven days a week with no appointment needed, and has a women's health center in the Greene Medical Arts building at 159 Jefferson Heights. Its hospital is across the river at 71 Prospect Avenue in Hudson (518-828-7601). The system's accepted-insurance page gives Columbia Memorial Hospital its own list of participating plans, by carrier, separate from Albany Medical Center's.
  • Doctors in Albany. If your doctors are in Albany, check them separately: being in the same health system does not mean the same plan contracts. The Albany Medical Center page sets out that hospital's own accepted-insurance list.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and, after a hospital stay, the rehab or nursing facility all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Columbia Memorial has no page of its own here; I check the hospital, the Rapid Care center and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Catskill

  • Your hospital can be in another county. Catskill sees the Greene County plan list: 49 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, Hudson, where Columbia Memorial's hospital is, is in Columbia County (48 plans). A Greene County plan has to list the Hudson hospital for it to be in network. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. Greene County Transit's Route 711 runs Monday to Friday from Catskill, with stops around the village, across the bridge to Columbia-Greene Community College, Columbia Memorial Health and the Hudson train station: eleven runs a day, the first leaving Catskill at 6 a.m. Riders 60 and over can have their fare fully subsidized after registering with the Greene County Department of Human Services (518-719-3555), and routes will go up to three-quarters of a mile off course for an added fee if you book by the end of the previous business day (Greene County Transit, 518-943-3625). The county also lists homebound medical transportation and a door-to-door shopping bus for residents 60 and over; ask the same office.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

How we work from Catskill

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Catskill residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Catskill plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including Columbia Memorial's hospital in Hudson, Rapid Care in Catskill and any doctors in Albany.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, gone through together by video or phone, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in Catskill and my hospital is in Hudson. Which plan list do I get?

Greene County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. Catskill is in Greene County; Hudson, across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, is in Columbia County, which has its own list. What matters for Columbia Memorial and your Hudson doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Greene County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Catskill include Columbia Memorial?

It depends on the plan. Columbia Memorial Health is part of the Albany Med Health System; its hospital is at 71 Prospect Avenue in Hudson, and it runs Rapid Care at 10 Grandview Avenue in Catskill. The system's accepted-insurance page gives Columbia Memorial Hospital its own list of participating plans, by carrier, not by individual plan, so I check the hospital, the Rapid Care center and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory.

I don't drive. How do I get to Columbia Memorial from Catskill?

Greene County Transit's Route 711 runs Monday to Friday from Catskill across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge to Columbia-Greene Community College, Columbia Memorial Health and the Hudson train station, eleven runs a day. Riders 60 and over can have their fare fully subsidized after registering with the Greene County Department of Human Services (518-719-3555). When you rely on the bus, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Catskill residents?

Greene County's aging services, listed by the state as the Greene County Department for the Aging, are at 411 Main Street in Catskill, (518) 719-3555, and offer HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling, to Greene County residents with Medicare. Appointments are required, so call ahead. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Catskill clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Catskill residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes, and a full review works the same way over video or phone.
