Medicare agent for Athens

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Athens residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The Town of Athens is at the eastern end of Greene County, the Village sits on the Hudson waterfront, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, wherever your doctors are.

Where Athens residents get care

  • Columbia Memorial Health, part of the Albany Med Health System, with care centers across Columbia and Greene counties. Its hospital is at 71 Prospect Avenue in Hudson (518-828-7601), and its Rapid Care at 10 Grandview Avenue in Catskill (518-943-9100) is open seven days a week with no appointment needed. The system's accepted-insurance page gives Columbia Memorial Hospital its own list of participating plans, by carrier.
  • Albany Medical Center at 43 New Scotland Avenue in Albany (518-262-3125), which has a separate list on the same page. Being in the same health system does not mean the same plan contracts. The Albany Medical Center page sets out which carriers it lists.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and, after a hospital stay, the rehab or nursing facility all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Columbia Memorial has no page of its own here; I check the hospital, the Rapid Care center and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Athens

  • Your hospital can be in another county. The Town of Athens, set up in 1815 from parts of Catskill and Coxsackie, and the Village of Athens, Greene County's first incorporated village, both see the Greene County plan list: 49 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The City of Hudson, where Columbia Memorial's hospital is, is in Columbia County (48 plans), and Albany is in Albany County (57 plans). A Greene County plan has to list those hospitals for them to be in network. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • On the Hudson waterfront. The Village's flood preparedness guide says the Hudson River and Murderer's Creek put some areas of the village at risk of flooding, and its emergency kit list starts with a week's supply of prescription medications and a list of your doctors and medical information. Your Medicare card, your plan card and the written comparison from a review belong in that kit too.
  • Getting to appointments. Greene County's aging services list homebound medical transportation and a door-to-door shopping bus for older residents, alongside Greene County Transit (518-943-3625), which the county describes as running between the Village of Catskill, outlying areas and parts of Columbia County, booked at least a day ahead. Medicaid members can use New York's Medicaid transportation line, 855-360-3545. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere you can reach.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in the Athens ZIP code, 12015. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover those two cases.

How we work from Athens

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Athens residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What an Athens plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including Columbia Memorial's hospital in Hudson, Rapid Care in Catskill and any doctors in Albany.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, gone through together by video or phone, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in Athens and my hospital is in Hudson. Which plan list do I get?

Greene County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. The Town and Village of Athens are in Greene County; the City of Hudson, where Columbia Memorial's hospital is, is in Columbia County, and Albany is in Albany County. Each county has its own list. What matters for your Hudson or Albany doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Greene County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Do Medicare Advantage plans in Athens include Columbia Memorial?

It depends on the plan. Columbia Memorial Health is part of the Albany Med Health System; its hospital is at 71 Prospect Avenue in Hudson, and it runs Rapid Care at 10 Grandview Avenue in Catskill. The system's accepted-insurance page gives Columbia Memorial Hospital its own list of participating plans, by carrier, not by individual plan, so I check the hospital, the Rapid Care center and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory.

I don't drive. How do I get to appointments from Athens?

Greene County's aging services list homebound medical transportation, a door-to-door shopping bus and Greene County Transit. The county's directory of services describes Greene County Transit (518-943-3625) as bus service between the Village of Catskill, outlying areas and parts of Columbia County, booked at least a day ahead. If you have Medicaid, New York's Medicaid transportation line is 855-360-3545. Ask the Department for the Aging (518-719-3555) what runs from your address; when you rely on rides, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Athens residents?

Greene County's aging services, listed by the state as the Greene County Department for the Aging, are at 411 Main Street in Catskill, (518) 719-3555, and offer HIICAP, free one-on-one Medicare counselling with state-certified counselors, to Greene County residents with Medicare. Appointments are required, so call ahead. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Athens clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Athens residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes, and a full review works the same way over video or phone.
