Medicare agent for Hunter and Tannersville

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Hunter and Tannersville residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The Town of Hunter, with the Villages of Hunter and Tannersville, is in Greene County, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, wherever your doctors are.

Where Hunter and Tannersville residents get care

  • Tannersville Family Care, 6225 Route 23A, Tannersville (518-589-6843) — a family medicine and primary care practice, open weekdays 8 to 4, that Columbia Memorial Health lists among its physician practices.
  • Columbia Memorial Health, part of the Albany Med Health System, with care centers across Columbia and Greene counties. Its hospital is at 71 Prospect Avenue in Hudson (518-828-7601), in Columbia County. The system's accepted-insurance page gives Columbia Memorial Hospital its own list of participating plans, separate from Albany Medical Center's.
  • Doctors in Albany. If your doctors are in Albany, check them separately: being in the same health system does not mean the same plan contracts. The Albany Medical Center page sets out that hospital's own accepted-insurance list.

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and, after a hospital stay, the rehab or nursing facility all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Columbia Memorial has no page of its own here; I check the hospital, the Tannersville practice and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory.

What's particular about Hunter and Tannersville

  • One town, two villages, one plan list. The Town of Hunter takes in the Village of Hunter and the Village of Tannersville, in the Catskill Park on Greene County's southern border. All of it sees the Greene County plan list: 49 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Hudson, where Columbia Memorial's hospital is, is in Columbia County (48 plans), and Ulster County, to the south, has its own list (34 plans). A Greene County plan has to list the Hudson hospital for it to be in network. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. Greene County Transit's Route 708 runs on Wednesdays between Catskill and Hunter by way of Palenville, Haines Falls and Tannersville. Route 709 runs on Fridays, with stops in Hunter and at the medical offices on Jefferson Heights in Catskill. Request-only stops need a call to Greene County Transit the day before, during business hours. Riders 60 and over ride fully subsidized after registering with the Greene County Department of Human Services (518-719-3555), which also lists homebound medical transportation and a door-to-door shopping bus.
  • The ambulance. The Town of Hunter's site lists Hunter Ambulance, with a station line at 518-589-4045. Medicare Advantage plans set their own cost for ambulance trips, so I show it for each plan.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree coverage and part of the year away. If you have retiree coverage, how it coordinates with Medicare comes first; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases. If you spend part of the year somewhere else, an HMO generally covers care outside its network only for emergencies, urgent care away from home and temporary out-of-area dialysis; Original Medicare with Medigap works with any provider in the country that accepts Medicare.

What a Hunter and Tannersville plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including Tannersville Family Care, Columbia Memorial's hospital in Hudson and any doctors in Catskill or Albany.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, gone through together by video or phone, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

My doctor is at Tannersville Family Care. Do Medicare Advantage plans include it?

It depends on the plan. Tannersville Family Care, at 6225 Route 23A in Tannersville, is a family medicine and primary care practice that Columbia Memorial Health lists among its physician practices, part of the Albany Med Health System. The system's accepted-insurance page gives Columbia Memorial Hospital its own list of participating plans, separate from Albany Medical Center's. I check the practice, the hospital its doctors use and each of your other doctors by name in the specific plan's directory.

I live in Hunter and my hospital is in Hudson. Which plan list do I get?

Greene County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. The Town of Hunter and both of its villages are in Greene County; Hudson, where Columbia Memorial's hospital is, is in Columbia County, and Ulster County, along the town's southern border, has its own list too. What matters for the hospital and your doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Greene County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

I don't drive. Can I get from Hunter or Tannersville to appointments in Catskill?

Greene County Transit's Route 708 runs on Wednesdays between Catskill and Hunter by way of Palenville, Haines Falls and Tannersville, and Route 709 runs on Fridays, with stops in Hunter and at the medical offices on Jefferson Heights in Catskill. Some stops are on request only, and for those you call Greene County Transit the day before, during business hours. Riders 60 and over ride fully subsidized after registering with the Greene County Department of Human Services (518-719-3555). When you rely on the bus, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Hunter and Tannersville residents?

The Greene County Department for the Aging, at 411 Main Street in Catskill, (518) 719-3555, offers HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling, to Greene County residents with Medicare. Appointments are required, so call ahead. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Hunter and Tannersville clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Hunter and Tannersville residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes, and a full review works the same way over video or phone.
