Medicare agent for Amsterdam
My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Amsterdam residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The City of Amsterdam is in Montgomery County, and that decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from. Before anything else, I check how a plan treats St. Mary's Healthcare and the doctors you already see.
Where Amsterdam residents get care
Amsterdam's hospital is St. Mary's Healthcare, which its own history page says left the Ascension Health network in 2021:
- St. Mary's Hospital, 427 Guy Park Avenue (518-842-1900), with its emergency department on the second floor (518-841-7237).
- Rao Outpatient Pavilion, 4950 State Highway 30: the Amsterdam Urgent Care Center (518-841-3600) and the Amsterdam Family Health Center (518-841-3770), among other practices.
- Memorial Building, 4988 State Highway 30: an acute inpatient rehabilitation unit (518-841-3584) and the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, St. Mary's nursing home (518-841-3571).
St. Mary's accepted-insurance page lists carriers, not Medicare Advantage plans. Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, a separate organization, also lists a primary and specialty care center in Amsterdam, and specialists in Schenectady or Albany are another set of contracts again. With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital and any rehab or nursing stay all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. The pages for Ellis Hospital and Albany Medical Center show which carriers each one lists; I still check each hospital and doctor by name in the plan's directory.
What's particular about Amsterdam
- An Amsterdam address is not always Montgomery County. The City of Amsterdam and the Town of Amsterdam are separate municipalities, both in Montgomery County, which has 39 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The Town of Perth, north of both, uses an Amsterdam 12010 mailing address but is in Fulton County (37 plans). Schenectady County, at the other end of CDTA's Route 605, has its own list (57 plans). Plans follow the county you live in, not your post office or your doctors.
- Getting to appointments. The Office for the Aging's OFA Senior Transport gives volunteer rides to non-emergency medical appointments for Montgomery County residents 60 and over who can manage getting in and out of the car on their own and aren't Medicaid eligible for medical transport; book at least seven days ahead, after the paperwork is in (518-843-2300). It also offers taxi tickets toward rides to medical appointments. On regular buses, CDTA's Route 605 runs seven days a week from St. Mary's Hospital on Guy Park Avenue to downtown Schenectady, stopping at Ellis Hospital on Nott Street; Route 601 stops at St. Mary's Memorial Campus on weekdays and Saturdays; and the Gloversville Transit System's Amsterdam route comes in from Gloversville on weekdays, stopping at both St. Mary's sites. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those routes reach.
- Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in Amsterdam (12010). In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
- Social Security. Social Security's office locator assigns the 12010 ZIP code to its Schenectady office at One Broadway Center. Medicare Part A and B sign-up runs through Social Security.
- Retiree and employer coverage first. Whether an individual plan adds to retiree or employer coverage or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

How we work from Amsterdam
My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Amsterdam residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.
What an Amsterdam plan review covers
- Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including St. Mary's and any specialists in Schenectady or Albany.
- Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
- Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
- A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.
My mailing address says Amsterdam, but I live in Perth. Which plan list do I get?
Fulton County's. The Town of Perth uses an Amsterdam, NY 12010 mailing address, but it is in Fulton County, north of the Town and City of Amsterdam, which are both in Montgomery County. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not the name on your mail, so I check your county before we compare anything.
Do Medicare Advantage plans in Amsterdam include St. Mary's Healthcare?
St. Mary's accepted-insurance page lists Medicare and a list of insurance carriers, but it doesn't name individual Medicare Advantage plans. A carrier is not a plan, so before you enroll I check St. Mary's Hospital, its health centers and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's own directory.
I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Amsterdam?
The Montgomery County Office for the Aging runs OFA Senior Transport, volunteer rides to non-emergency medical appointments for county residents 60 and over who can get in and out of a car unassisted and aren't Medicaid eligible for medical transport. It needs at least seven days' notice and paperwork first; the main line is 518-843-2300. On regular buses, CDTA's Route 605 runs seven days a week from St. Mary's Hospital on Guy Park Avenue to downtown Schenectady, with a stop at Ellis Hospital on Nott Street, and Route 601 serves St. Mary's Memorial Campus on weekdays and Saturdays.
Where is free Medicare counselling for Amsterdam residents?
The Montgomery County Office for the Aging, Inc., at 135 Guy Park Avenue in Amsterdam, (518) 843-2300, runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program, by appointment. It covers Medicare Parts A through D, Medigap, EPIC and help with claims. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501.
Do you meet Amsterdam clients in person?
No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Amsterdam residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The comparison and the enrollment work the same way, and I stay your contact afterwards.
