Medicare agent for Ellenville and Wawarsing
My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Ellenville and Wawarsing residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. The Village of Ellenville sits inside the Town of Wawarsing in southwestern Ulster County, home to Ellenville Regional Hospital, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, in the village and the town alike.
Where Ellenville and Wawarsing residents get care
- Ellenville Regional Hospital, at 10 Healthy Way in Ellenville (845-647-6400), which describes itself as a critical access hospital and a teaching hospital. Its emergency room is open 24/7, admits acutely ill patients to its Medical-Surgical Unit and coordinates transfers to advanced care centers when needed. Its services include cardiology and cardiac rehab, oncology and hematology, orthopedics, pulmonology, ambulatory surgery, imaging, a laboratory, physical therapy and wound care.
- Rehab after a hospital stay. The hospital's Sub Acute Rehab / Swing Bed Program lets people recovering from surgery, illness or an inpatient stay, including joint replacement and stroke, rebuild strength at the hospital before going home. The hospital says Medicare covers it; under a Medicare Advantage plan it has to be in the plan's network like any other facility.
- HealthAlliance Hospital, at 105 Mary's Avenue in Kingston (845-338-2500), is part of a different system, the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).
With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and, after a hospital stay, the rehab or nursing facility all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. Neither hospital has a page of its own here; I check each one, the swing-bed program and each of your doctors by name in the plan's directory for Ulster County.
What's particular about Ellenville and Wawarsing
- Village and town, one plan list. The Village of Ellenville has its own government, with Village Hall at 2 Elting Court, and sits inside the Town of Wawarsing, whose Town Hall is at 108 Canal Street. Village and town are both in Ulster County, so every address sees the Ulster County plan list: 34 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Doctors you see in another county have to be checked against the Ulster County plan you choose. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
- Getting to appointments. If you are 60 or older and registered with the Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free: two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. The van needs an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and runs on availability. UCAT's Route E runs Monday to Saturday and serves Ellenville, Development Court in Kingston, where the Office for the Aging is, and Ulster County Community College; the weekday CL route, serving the college and New Paltz, has connections to Ellenville. UCAT's main line is (845) 334-8458. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those routes reach.
- Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
- Retiree and employer coverage first. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

The Ulster County Office for the Aging at 1003 Development Court in Kingston (845-340-3456) runs HIICAP, New York's free, unbiased Medicare counselling, with one-on-one appointments at the office or in the community. Do Medicare Advantage plans in Ellenville include Ellenville Regional Hospital?
It depends on the plan. Ellenville Regional Hospital, at 10 Healthy Way, describes itself as a critical access hospital, with a 24/7 emergency room, inpatient care and a range of outpatient services. HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston belongs to a different system, the Westchester Medical Center Health Network. Before you enroll, I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Ulster County.
After a hospital stay, can I do my rehab in Ellenville?
Ellenville Regional Hospital runs a Sub Acute Rehab / Swing Bed Program at the hospital for people recovering from surgery, illness or an inpatient stay, including joint replacement and stroke, and says Medicare covers it. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, you can use any facility that accepts Medicare. With a Medicare Advantage plan, the program has to be in the plan's network and follow its rules, so I check it by name along with the hospital.
I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Ellenville?
If you are 60 or older and registered with the Ulster County Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT buses or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free, up to two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. Van rides need an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and depend on availability. UCAT's Route E runs Monday to Saturday and serves Ellenville, Development Court in Kingston and Ulster County Community College. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.
