Medicare agent for the Town of Rosendale

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Rosendale residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. Rosendale is a town in east-central Ulster County, from Tillson and Binnewater to Cottekill and part of High Falls, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, wherever your doctors are.

Where Rosendale residents get care

The hospitals below are in Kingston and, across the Hudson, in Poughkeepsie. They belong to two health systems that contract with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:

  • Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) — HealthAlliance Hospital, at 105 Mary's Avenue in Kingston (845-338-2500), and MidHudson Regional Hospital, at 241 North Road in Poughkeepsie (845-483-5000).
  • Northwell Health — Vassar Brothers Medical Center, at 45 Reade Place in Poughkeepsie (845-454-8500).

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and, after a hospital stay, the rehab or nursing facility all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here; I check each one, and each of your doctors, by name in the plan's directory for Ulster County.

What's particular about Rosendale

  • Many hamlets, one county list. The Town lists its hamlets as Binnewater, Bloomington, Bruceville, Cottekill, Creeklocks, Hickory Bush, part of High Falls, Lawrenceville, Le Fever Falls, Maple Hill, Rosendale, Tillson and Whiteport. All of them see the Ulster County plan list: 34 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Poughkeepsie, across the river, is in Dutchess County (42 plans), so doctors there have to be checked against the Ulster County plan you choose. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. If you are 60 or older and registered with the Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free: two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. The van needs an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and runs on availability. UCAT's Ulster Poughkeepsie Link runs every day between the Rosendale Park and Ride and the Poughkeepsie train station. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Phone signal. The Town's section of the county's 2024 hazard plan notes poor cell service in parts of town. A review works just as well on a landline call, with the written comparison sent by email or post.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. The county's hazard plan puts 25.9 percent of the town's residents at 65 or older. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover two of those cases.

Senior programs on Route 32 and the Ulster County Office for the Aging

The county's Senior Café serves lunch at the Rosendale Recreation Center, 1055 Route 32, on Fridays from 11:30 to 12:30, for Ulster County residents 60 and over; registration and a reservation are required, and the county lists (845) 331-2180 for the café. The Town's Community Center on Route 32 (845-658-8198) lists Rosendale Seniors among its fall programs, on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, 1 to 3. Free, unbiased Medicare counselling is through the Ulster County Office for the Aging at 1003 Development Court in Kingston (845-340-3456), which runs HIICAP, with one-on-one appointments at the office or in the community. More on the Medicare Savings Program, Extra Help and EPIC. The HIICAP page has every county office. Statewide HIICAP line: 1-800-701-0501. Town offices are at Town Hall, 1915 Lucas Avenue in Cottekill (845-658-3159).

How we work from Rosendale

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Rosendale residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Rosendale plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the hospital they admit to: HealthAlliance, MidHudson Regional or Vassar Brothers.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, gone through together by video or phone, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in Rosendale and my doctors are in Poughkeepsie. Which plan list do I get?

Ulster County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. Every hamlet in the Town of Rosendale is in Ulster County; Poughkeepsie, across the Hudson, is in Dutchess County, which has its own list. What matters for your Poughkeepsie doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Ulster County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Which hospitals do Medicare Advantage plans in Rosendale use?

It depends on the plan and on your doctors. HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston is part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), which also runs MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie is part of Northwell Health. A plan can contract with one system and not the other, so I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Ulster County.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Rosendale?

If you are 60 or older and registered with the Ulster County Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT buses or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free, up to two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. Van rides need an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and depend on availability. UCAT's Ulster Poughkeepsie Link also runs every day between the Rosendale Park and Ride and the Poughkeepsie train station. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Rosendale residents?

The Ulster County Office for the Aging at 1003 Development Court in Kingston, (845) 340-3456, runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program, with one-on-one appointments at the office or in the community. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Rosendale clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Rosendale residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes, and a full review works the same way over video or phone.
