Medicare agent for Wallkill and the Town of Shawangunk

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Wallkill residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. Wallkill and Walker Valley are the two hamlets of the Town of Shawangunk, on Ulster County's southern border, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, even when your doctors are across the line in Orange County.

Where Wallkill and Shawangunk residents get care

The hospitals below are in Kingston and Poughkeepsie, in Ulster and Dutchess counties, and in Newburgh and Middletown, in Orange County. They belong to different health systems, and a Medicare Advantage plan can include one and not another:

  • Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) — HealthAlliance Hospital, at 105 Mary's Avenue in Kingston (845-338-2500), and MidHudson Regional Hospital, at 241 North Road in Poughkeepsie (845-483-5000).
  • Northwell Health — Vassar Brothers Medical Center, at 45 Reade Place in Poughkeepsie (845-454-8500).
  • Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall — a not-for-profit hospital that partnered with the Montefiore Health System, with a Newburgh campus at 70 Dubois Street (845-561-4400) and a Cornwall campus at 19 Laurel Avenue (845-534-7711).
  • Garnet Health — Garnet Health Medical Center, at 707 East Main Street in Middletown (845-333-1000).

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and, after a hospital stay, the rehab or nursing facility all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here; I check each one, and each of your doctors, by name in the plan's directory for Ulster County.

What's particular about Wallkill and Shawangunk

  • Two hamlets, one town, one plan list. The county's 2024 hazard plan places the Town of Shawangunk along Ulster County's southern border and names its two hamlets, Wallkill, named for the river that flows north through it, and Walker Valley. Wallkill is a hamlet, not a village, so the Town of Shawangunk, with Town Hall at 14 Central Avenue, is the local government. Every address in the town sees the Ulster County plan list: 34 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. Orange County, across the county's southern border, has its own list, and so does Dutchess County, where two of the hospitals above are (42 plans). A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Doctors across the county line. A Newburgh or Middletown doctor is in Orange County, so the question is never which plans Orange County has, but whether that doctor is in the Ulster County plan you choose. Being in the same health system as an in-network hospital does not settle it; the plan's directory does.
  • Getting to appointments. If you are 60 or older and registered with the Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free: two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. The van needs an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and runs on availability. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. The hazard plan puts 11.5 percent of the town's residents at 65 or older. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

How we work from Wallkill

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Wallkill residents by phone, WhatsApp and video, Walker Valley included. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Wallkill plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the hospital they admit to: HealthAlliance, MidHudson Regional, Vassar Brothers, Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall or Garnet Health Medical Center.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, gone through together by video or phone, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in Wallkill and my doctors are in Newburgh or Middletown. Which plan list do I get?

Ulster County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. The Town of Shawangunk, Wallkill and Walker Valley included, is in Ulster County; Orange County, across the county's southern border, has its own list. What matters for your Newburgh or Middletown doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Ulster County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Which hospitals do Medicare Advantage plans in Wallkill use?

It depends on the plan and on your doctors. HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston and MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie are part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth); Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie is part of Northwell Health. In Orange County, Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall has a campus in Newburgh, and Garnet Health Medical Center is in Middletown. A plan can include one and not another, so I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Ulster County.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Wallkill?

If you are 60 or older and registered with the Ulster County Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT buses or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free, up to two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. Van rides need an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and depend on availability. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Shawangunk residents?

The Ulster County Office for the Aging at 1003 Development Court in Kingston, (845) 340-3456, runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program, with one-on-one appointments at the office or in the community. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Wallkill clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Wallkill residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes, and a full review works the same way over video or phone.
