Medicare agent for Highland and the Town of Lloyd

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Highland residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. Highland is a hamlet in the Town of Lloyd, on the west bank of the Hudson in Ulster County, and the county decides which Medicare Advantage plans you can choose from, even though the Walkway Over the Hudson puts Poughkeepsie on the other side of the river.

Where Highland residents get care

Highland has primary care in the hamlet, and the hospitals below are in Poughkeepsie and Kingston, run by two health systems that contract with Medicare Advantage carriers separately:

  • Northwell Health — Northwell Health Primary Care at Highland, at 514 Route 299 (845-691-9200), with physicals, same-day sick visits, telehealth, medication management and screenings. Northwell also runs Vassar Brothers Medical Center, at 45 Reade Place in Poughkeepsie (845-454-8500).
  • Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) — MidHudson Regional Hospital, at 241 North Road in Poughkeepsie (845-483-5000), and HealthAlliance Hospital, at 105 Mary's Avenue in Kingston (845-338-2500).

With a Medicare Advantage HMO, your primary-care doctor, your specialists, the hospital they admit to and, after a hospital stay, the rehab or nursing facility all have to be in the plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. None of these hospitals has a page of its own here; I check each one, and each of your doctors, by name in the plan's directory for Ulster County.

What's particular about Highland

  • A hamlet, a town, two counties. Highland is a hamlet within the Town of Lloyd, which the county's 2024 hazard plan places in eastern Ulster County along the Hudson. Highland addresses see the Ulster County plan list: 34 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The Walkway Over the Hudson connects Highland to Poughkeepsie on the east bank, which is in Dutchess County (42 plans). Doctors in either county have to be checked against the Ulster County plan you choose. A move out of your plan's service area, or to an address with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.
  • Getting to appointments. If you are 60 or older and registered with the Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free: two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. The van needs an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and runs on availability. If that's how you get around, the plan's doctors have to be somewhere those rides reach.
  • Medigap. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions. Premiums are set by region, and I check the Department of Financial Services' published rates for yours.
  • Retiree and employer coverage first. The county's hazard plan puts 18.3 percent of the town's residents at 65 or older. State, school district and hospital retirees, and people still working at 65, have coverage that coordinates with Medicare in its own way. Whether an individual plan adds to it or cancels it comes before any comparison; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover the two most common cases.

Highland Medicare facts for 2027

How we work from Highland

My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Highland residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your ZIP code, your doctors and where they are, your prescriptions, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Highland plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory, including the hospital they admit to: Vassar Brothers, MidHudson Regional or HealthAlliance.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, employer, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, gone through together by video or phone, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

Questions

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before they call.

Still have a question? Call (518) 902-8822 or book a call.

I live in Highland and my doctors are in Poughkeepsie. Which plan list do I get?

Ulster County's. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are filed by county and follow where you live, not where your doctors are. Highland is in the Town of Lloyd, in Ulster County; Poughkeepsie, on the east bank of the Hudson, is in Dutchess County, which has its own list. What matters for your Poughkeepsie doctors is whether they are in the directory of the Ulster County plan you choose, and I check each one by name.

Which hospitals do Medicare Advantage plans in Highland use?

It depends on the plan and on your doctors. Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie is part of Northwell Health, which also runs Northwell Health Primary Care at Highland on Route 299. MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie and HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston are part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth). A plan can contract with one system and not the other, so I check the hospital you'd use and each of your doctors by name in the specific plan's directory for Ulster County.

I don't drive. How do I get to medical appointments from Highland?

If you are 60 or older and registered with the Ulster County Office for the Aging, you can ride UCAT buses or the Office for the Aging's wheelchair-accessible medical van free, up to two round trips a week for medical care and one for shopping. Van rides need an advance reservation at (845) 334-8120, weekdays 8 to 4, and depend on availability. When you rely on rides like these, I check that a plan's doctors are somewhere you can reach.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Highland residents?

The Ulster County Office for the Aging at 1003 Development Court in Kingston, (845) 340-3456, runs HIICAP, New York's free and unbiased Medicare counselling program, with one-on-one appointments at the office or in the community. The statewide HIICAP line is 1-800-701-0501. HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Highland clients in person?

No. My office is in Clifton Park, and I work with Highland residents by phone, WhatsApp and video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes, and a full review works the same way over video or phone.
