Medicare agent for Queensbury

Queensbury is the town around Glens Falls, with all three of its Northway exits, 18, 19 and 20, inside the town line. Glens Falls Hospital's main campus is in the city, but some of its practices, and Hudson Headwaters' West Mountain health centers, are in the town itself, so a Medicare plan here has to fit doctors on both sides of the city line.

Where Queensbury residents get care

  • Glens Falls Hospital, 100 Park Street, Glens Falls (518-926-1000) — a member of the Albany Med Health System, with the Sheridan Emergency Department and the C.R. Wood Cancer Center on its campus in the city. The town's 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update lists three of its facilities in Queensbury: the Rehabilitation and Wellness Center on Country Club Road, Adirondack Cardiology at 6 Hearts Way (518-792-1233), and Advanced Imaging at Baybrook on Willowbrook Road. The Glens Falls Hospital page places every plan sold in Warren County against the hospital's own list.
  • Hudson Headwaters at West Mountain, 161 Carey Road, off Corinth Road. Building 2 is West Mountain Family Health (518-824-8610), family and internal medicine with a Glens Falls Hospital lab on site; Building 1 is West Mountain Specialty Care (518-824-2570), with nephrology, rheumatology, vascular services and podiatry. Hudson Headwaters is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center, and its insurance page names carriers, not individual Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Specialists further south. Saratoga Hospital and Albany Medical Center are in the same health system as Glens Falls Hospital, but being in the same system does not mean the same insurance contracts. A specialist in Saratoga Springs or Albany gets checked separately.

With a Medicare Advantage plan, the hospital, the practice on Hearts Way or Carey Road and each of your providers all have to be in the specific plan's directory for the year. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network, so any provider that accepts Medicare works. The carriers each Capital Region hospital lists are on one page.

What's particular about Queensbury

  • A town that is getting older. The town's 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update found that the 65-and-over age group grew more than any other between 2010 and 2020, and it names the town's nearness to Glens Falls Hospital as one reason it suits older residents. That makes the cardiology, imaging and rehabilitation sites in the town as much a part of the network check as the hospital itself.
  • Referrals at West Mountain. Hudson Headwaters says most specialists at West Mountain Specialty Care need a referral from your primary care provider. Medicare.gov says that in most cases an HMO plan needs a referral to see a specialist too, so with an HMO the primary care provider and the specialist both have to be in the plan's network. Original Medicare with Medigap has no plan referral rule.
  • Warren County's list, with one edge. The Town of Queensbury is in Warren County, the same list as Glens Falls: 45 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. The Census Bureau's ZIP-area file puts a small part of the 12804 ZIP code area in Washington County (44 plans), and the Hudson Falls school district reaches into the town. Neither changes your plans: the county you live in does. A move across the county line opens a Special Enrollment Period if your plan isn't sold at the new address or new plans are.
  • Medigap is priced like Albany. New York's Department of Financial Services compares Medigap premiums by region, and its Albany region covers ZIP codes starting 120–123 and 128–129, which takes in 12804, the Town Hall's ZIP code on Bay Road. In New York you can buy or switch Medigap in any month without health questions; the current premiums for the region are on their own page.
  • Retiree coverage and winters away. If you have retiree coverage from the state, a school district or another employer, how it coordinates with Medicare comes first; NYSHIP retirees and Medicare while working past 65 cover those two cases. If you spend part of the year somewhere warmer, an HMO covers care outside its network only for emergencies, urgent care away from home and temporary out-of-area dialysis.

Meeting in Queensbury

My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9. I come up the Northway to meet Queensbury clients at home, or we talk by phone, WhatsApp or video. A first call takes about fifteen minutes: your address, your doctors and where they practice, your prescriptions and pharmacy, and any retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage. Nothing is decided on a first call.

What a Queensbury plan review covers

  1. Every doctor you see, checked against each plan's current directory: Glens Falls Hospital, its practices in the town, your Hudson Headwaters health center and provider, and any specialists in Saratoga Springs or Albany, with any referral rules spelled out.
  2. Prescriptions priced through each plan's formulary for the full year, at the pharmacy you actually use.
  3. Retiree, VA or Medicaid coverage and exactly how each option would interact with it, plus a screening for the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.
  4. A written comparison with total yearly cost, and a plain statement of whether your current coverage should be left alone.

My specialist is at West Mountain on Carey Road. Do I need a referral?

Hudson Headwaters says most specialists at West Mountain Specialty Care, 161 Carey Road, Building 1, need a referral from your primary care provider; podiatry does not. A Medicare Advantage HMO can add its own rule: Medicare.gov says that in most cases you need a referral to see a specialist in an HMO plan. So with an HMO, your primary care provider, the specialist and the referral all have to line up inside the plan's network. I check the health center and each provider by name in the plan's directory before you enroll. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy has no network and no plan referral rule.

My mailing address is Queensbury 12804. Can I end up with a different plan list?

Plans follow the county you live in, not the post office. The Town of Queensbury is in Warren County, so a home in the town sees Warren County's list. The Census Bureau's ZIP-area file puts a small part of the 12804 ZIP code area in Washington County, so if your 12804 address is actually across the county line, your plans are Washington County's. A move to an address outside your plan's service area, or to one with new plan options, opens a Special Enrollment Period that runs for two full months after the move.

Is Queensbury Senior Citizens the place to get Medicare advice?

It is the town's senior organization: Queensbury Senior Citizens, Inc., at 742 Bay Road (518-761-8224), for people 50 and over, with the Town of Queensbury providing its housing and partial funding. Its site describes trips, fitness, classes and social programs, not Medicare counselling. Free, unbiased Medicare counselling is HIICAP, run by the Warren/Hamilton Counties Office for the Aging at 1340 State Route 9, (518) 761-6347.

Where is free Medicare counselling for Queensbury residents?

The Warren/Hamilton Counties Office for the Aging, on the first floor of the Human Services Building at 1340 State Route 9, (518) 761-6347, office hours 8 to 4. The mailing address reads Lake George, but the town's own plan notes that Warren County's offices are in Queensbury. HIICAP counsellors there help compare Medicare options and screen for EPIC and the Medicare Savings Program. I enroll you in the plans I'm appointed with and stay your contact afterwards; HIICAP is the second opinion I recommend to anyone who wants one.

Do you meet Queensbury clients in person?

Yes. My office is in Clifton Park, off Northway Exit 9, and I come up the Northway to meet people at home in Queensbury, or we talk by phone, WhatsApp or video. No fee for Medicare plan help.
